Samsung Galaxy S22 release date and features

Samsung's 2022 lineup of flagships, the Galaxy S22 series, consists of three devices, the Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra, rounded up as a rather promising dreamteam to spearhead into the competition.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the lineup, with a sophisticated posh design, top-of-the-line hardware, and an S Pen stylus in tow. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus serve as the more approachable and user-friendly devices, with no-frills designs, and an affordable price tag to boot.

The Galaxy S22 series has been succeeded by both the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 series in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Galaxy S22 Specs

In terms of display size, Samsung slightly decreased screen sizes across the board in comparison with last year’s Galaxy S21 series. Thus, we get a Galaxy S22 with a 6.1-inch display, an S22 Plus with a 6.6-inch one, and an S22 Ultra with a 6.8-inch display. The Galaxy S22 Ultra can intelligently switch between 1fps and 120fps depending on the on-screen content that the user is enjoying, while the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus can switch between 48 and 120Hz.

The Galaxy S22 series is powered by its own Exynos and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon’s top chipset depending on the region. The top Qualcomm chipset right now is built with a 4nm manufacturing process and comes with a high-performance Cortex-X2 core at 3000 MHz, three Cortex-A710 cores running at 2500 MHz, and Cortex-A510 cores clocked at up to 1800 MHz.

The 4nm Exynos 2200 sports the latest ARM-based CPU cores and an upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) to give the component a powerful edge in mobile gaming, photography, and social media apps. It also comes with the AMD RDNA 2 GPU, which brings ray tracing to mobile GPUs for the very first time and promises exceptional gaming performance.

What is the Galaxy S22 battery capacity?

  • Galaxy S22: 3,700mAh
  • Galaxy S22+: 4,500mAh
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: 5,000mAh

The Galaxy S22 battery is a smaller 3700mAh unit compared to the 4000mAh battery on the Galaxy S21. The Galaxy S22+ scores yet another downgrade—it has a 4500mAh battery compared to the 4800mAh component on the Galaxy S21+. The only one of the three models not losing any battery capacity this year is the Galaxy S22 Ultra with its 5000mAh battery matching the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Have in mind that chargers and data cables are sold separately.

When it comes to charging, the smallest Galaxy S22 has picked the short stick. It only supports 25W wired charging, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22 Plus can benefit from up to 45W of fast wired charging. This helps them get juiced to more than 50% in less than 20 minutes. All phones support 15W wireless charging, and have Wireless PowerShare so that you can share your battery juice with other compatible devices.
