Following several months of... relatively muted speculation and largely unexciting rumors, Samsung's "slimmest and lightest Flip" phone is finally here, although if you didn't pay close enough attention to the company's (unnecessarily) lengthy Unpacked event yesterday, you might not have realized that's the case.
Obviously, no one can know for sure if Samsung is planning to release a Galaxy Z Flip 9 next year or not just 24 hours after the Z Flip 8's official announcement, but the writing does appear to be on the wall in more than one way.
Even though it's early days, the marketing campaign around the company's latest foldables unquestionably favors the two book-style models, as the Z Flip 8 doesn't even seem to have gotten a product introduction video on YouTube. Granted, the refreshed flip phone does star in Samsung's big new Spider-Man commercial (which hilariously doesn't feature Tom Holland), but even that clip ends with a Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra plug and no mention of the Z Flip 8's live pre-orders.
Over on Instagram, every single one of the tech giant's last eight posts is either focused on the Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra (or both), while the official Samsung Mobile X account features a header photo of the same two devices and nothing else.

Will you buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8?
Do you really think this is all a coincidence? Fine, then explain why the Galaxy Z Flip 8 doesn't pack a high-capacity silicon-carbon battery like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, and why the extra-durable Flex Titanium display technology is only added to Samsung's Z Fold 7 sequels rather than the Z Flip 7's follow-up as well.
How can we show Samsung we still care about the Galaxy Z Flip family?
Well, for starters, we actually need to care about "modern" flip phones, which I really do hope is still the case. Personally, I've yet to buy a foldable, but that's only because I'm cheap and I was expecting a better Fan Edition device than last year's Z Flip 7 FE... which is clearly not happening.

While the trend is definitely favorable to the Galaxy Z Fold family, I believe there's enough room on the market for three (or even more) Samsung foldables, and the best way to demonstrate that is obviously to buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 this year.
Will Samsung yield to our pressure and revise its 2027 product launch plans... assuming a Z Flip 9 is indeed not in the pipeline right now? I think that's a strong possibility, and the Galaxy S26 Plus and S25 Plus are living proof. Remember, the Galaxy S Plus line has been rumored to go the way of the dodo for several years, and although I don't have any evidence to back my theory, I believe Samsung dropped that plan because the Galaxy S24 Plus and S25 Plus proved too successful. Not more successful than the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra, of course, but successful enough to warrant sequels.
Don't like the Z Flip 8? Get a Motorola Razr instead!
This is a slightly riskier play, but the other thing that could save the Z Flip family from extinction would be Motorola's continued success in the foldable landscape.

That feat was somehow possible without a book-style device, and while the company has released such a device in the meantime, its flip-style Razrs are still its best hopes at achieving another impressive foldable sales total (in North America and around the world) this year.
The problem with the Razr (2026) roster is that it's a little costly for its own good, but that's where a bunch of substantial discounts... and a crazy good Razr Ultra (2025) deal have come in. If you ask me, that 2025 ultra-high-end model remains the best foldable phone around (at least in terms of bang for your buck), closely followed by Motorola's "vanilla" Razr (2026).
Now, this may or may not work, but if you buy those products in large enough numbers, Samsung is likely to reconsider the rumored retirement of the Galaxy Z Flip line and continue to try to compete in the shrinking but still significant market segment. And if the Razr (2026) is really successful, the Z Flip 9 might even fix everything that's wrong with its predecessor, from that underwhelming 4,300mAh battery capacity to those disappointing 25W charging speeds and unremarkable 50 + 12MP dual rear-facing camera system. Let a boy dream, will you?
