Design and display of Samsung's latest flip phone

The dimensions and weight of the Flip 8 have been updated from last year's model. The device weighs just 180 grams and is 6.1 mm thick, making it Samsung's slimmest and lightest clamshell phone. For reference, its predecessor is 6.5 mm thick and weighs 188 grams. It's even thinner than one of its main competitors, the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026, which measures 7.19 mm thick when unfolded.

Just like the Galaxy Z Fold phones, the Flip 8 allows you to use the outer display as the main screen. You will experience seamless continuity and functionality between both displays. Your favorite apps and insights are directly available on the cover screen so that you can access your desired information within just a few taps.

The Now Brief capability displays insights on the cover screen timely so that you can take the required action at the right moment. Furthermore, Gemini intelligence is available through the outer display, which you can use to complete connected tasks using natural language.

Camera details of Galaxy Z Flip 8

Samsung decided to continue with the same camera setup in the Flip 8 that was used in its predecessor. That means you get a dual camera setup at the back with the main shooter being 50 MP while the other is a 12 MP ultra-wide lens. At the front, you get a 10 MP selfie camera.

However, it's definitely worth noting that even with the same hardware, the phone is likely to deliver better camera performance than last year's model, thanks to the use of new hardware, the latest Android update, and software improvements. The camera app of the new phone comes with the horizontal lock feature, which was until now exclusive to the Galaxy S26 series. Once you enable it, you will have a perfectly straight horizon no matter how much you tilt your phone or even flip it upside down. The capability is also reported to be available on the Galaxy S25 series through a One UI 9 update.

Samsung could have done much better

The Flip 8 certainly comes with some important upgrades, like the all-new processor and the use of the latest display technology, but I was expecting more from Samsung, especially considering the price increase. I, personally, wanted the device to get the privacy display, which is currently exclusive to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, faster charging, and also the use of anti-reflective coating on the display.

Furthermore, I had hoped the tech giant would make the Flex Titanium technology available in all Z-series phones, but it turns out it is available only in the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra. Many users on platforms like Reddit have pointed out that the crease on Samsung's flip phones becomes more noticeable over time, so the company had a chance to address those concerns, but it ultimately chose not to.
