iPhone Duo looks better out of the box but apparently soon falls behind Galaxy Z Fold 8 in what matters most to me
The iPhone Duo looks like it might beat the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in an important aspect of foldable design but it becomes apparent pretty quickly that this just isn't the case.
The iPhone Duo comes with a matte layer on top of its internal display which Apple calls the nano-texture coating. This layer not only acts as a screen protector but also serves to hide the display crease better than most other foldable phones.

Apple was proud that this solution to hiding the crease hadn’t leaked ahead of launch unlike the iPhone Duo’s aspect ratio. However, testing now shows that the company’s foldable iPhone still falls behind the Galaxy Z Fold 8 after some use.
Better out of the box

A new iPhone Duo hides its display crease better than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 using the nano-texture coating. However, according to tests (translated source) shared (translated source) by a very reputable industry insider, the iPhone Duo doesn’t get to keep its edge over the Fold 8 for long.

iPhone Duo develops a deeper crease
The tests found that, after 3,000 folds, the crease on the iPhone Duo had worsened considerably compared to how it looked like when the phone was brand new. On the other hand, the crease on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 retained most of its shallowness and appeared less noticeable than the crease on the iPhone Duo.
Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that the iPhone Duo becomes completely unusable or starts looking like a foldable phone from five years ago. According to other tests, the iPhone Duo’s crease isn’t too unsightly even after a whopping 10,000 folds.

All this shows is that the iPhone Duo doesn’t maintain a shallower depth like its biggest competitor. I expect improvements in this regard with the iPhone Duo 2 and onwards.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 is more reliable overall
Samsung does, after all, have many more years of experience in the foldable smartphone market. | Image by PhoneArena
Samsung has had over eight years of experience in this field, so it’s only natural that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 maintains a less noticeable crease compared to the first-generation iPhone Duo. In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold is probably a much more reliable foldable overall.
For example, app support on the iPhone Duo right now is spotty and the overall user experience for people who use many apps daily is much better on the Fold 8. The “FaceTime camera” as Apple calls it, which is the under-display camera on the inner screen, is also just downright bad.
In addition, multiple reports are coming in of iPhone Duo units breaking, pointing to a design flaw that seems to have slipped by Apple. The iPhone Duo’s internal display is cracking in the same place over and over, including in durability tests, which points to a design flaw.
Apple wanted to be held accountable for the crease

Day one buyers are sharing how the crease is faring on their new iPhone Duo and, I have to say, it deepens a lot quicker than I would have liked. Fortunately for Apple, however, most of its user base doesn’t mind because the display still looks great when not viewed at an angle, which is true of pretty much every foldable on the market.

Unfortunately for Apple, on the other hand, the company wanted to be held accountable for the iPhone Duo’s crease. It looks like it will be, not just because the crease isn’t as good as Apple claimed it would be, but also because more and more Duos keep breaking and it’s still only launch day.
The nano-texture coating might be pretty good at hiding the crease on a brand new iPhone Duo but it can’t do much after the first few hundred folds. And, if the aforementioned design flaw is more common than it seems right now, then Apple might just have another “-gate” on its hands.
