T-Mobile got a head start over rivals by starting out with pure 5G or 5G Standalone (5G SA), largely skipping mmWave in favor of mid-band and low-band spectrum. While mmWave offers the fastest speeds, it has a short range. It works well in outdoor areas like stadiums and event venues, but in other places, it gets blocked by walls, windows, and trees.
Besides, T-Mobile argues that speed is just one piece of a larger puzzle. Responsiveness and reliability matter just as much if you don't want that Zoom meeting to keep cutting out or uploads to move at a snail's pace.

T-Mobile has moved beyond 5G SA. Early last year, it rolled out 5G Advanced, which can be termed as a halfway stop between 5G and 6G. This foundation unlocks more advanced technologies.
L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable throughput) reduces lag and increases real-time responsiveness even under heavy traffic. That's crucial for times when every millisecond matters, such as cloud gaming and remote driving.
6-carrier aggregation (6-CA) combines low- and mid-band channels into a wider pipeline for boosting download speed and increasing network capacity.
