Angry users demand Apple replace broken iPhone Duo but I think there’s a case to be made here

This might be one particular broken iPhone Duo case where I think Apple doesn't need to apologize.

Of the numerous iPhone Duo units that have broken since launch, one unit that broke after only three hours of use was not replaced or repaired under warranty by Apple. The company alleges misuse but customers say that Apple should replace the iPhone Duo, especially given how many others are breaking across the globe.

Apple denies repair or replacement for broken iPhone Duo

One user who got her new iPhone Duo had the phone break after a mere three hours of use. The same issue that is plaguing so many other iPhone Duos — a crack running down the center of the internal display — happened to her Duo as well.

She describes feeling a resistance when opening the phone and then a loud pop as the display broke. Lines then appeared on the screen the same as every other case of a broken iPhone Duo.

However, Apple denied a replacement or a repair under warranty and claimed that its internal investigation had found that the phone must have been dropped.

Users feel that Apple owes a replacement regardless

In a poll we asked you how you think Apple handled this case. Almost 75 percent of voters said that Apple handled this disgracefully and should either pay for a repair or offer a replacement iPhone Duo.

A little over 12 percent of you said that Apple was not in the wrong here. The company’s warranties do not cover accidental damage and, if the iPhone Duo had been dropped, then Apple is not obligated to have the phone repaired or replaced for free.

Lastly, the remaining 13 percent of respondents said that this was a tough call to make and that they weren’t sure. What about you?

I think a case can be made for Apple here

Look, I’m the last person who wishes to give companies a free pass for badly designed products. However, if the phone really was dropped, then Apple really isn’t in the wrong here. It’s just sticking to its warranty terms.

Though I will say that, after how many iPhone Duos have broken since launch, Apple needs all the goodwill it can get. A normal iPhone would have easily survived a fall and Apple should have just replaced this iPhone Duo even if it is a victim of accidental damage.
