The iPhone Duo has been officially out in the wild since Friday, October 23, and within hours reports of the screen cracking in a very particular spot began to pour in from different sides of the internet. Now, Apple has come forward to acknowledge the problem and provide guidance to those affected. This is definitely not the launch weekend Apple wanted for its $1,999 rival to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

We have covered these iPhone Duo screen breakage reports extensively, including a theory on what may be causing the issue.

Apple's response to the cracked iPhone Duo units

Apple confirmed the issue today in a statement to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the outlet's chief Apple correspondent.

Apple stated that most Duos are not affected and that the units that have been affected usually show the defect quickly. It should be noted that Apple did not specify what a "small" number of units actually constitutes.

Bloomberg reports that stores and support staff at Apple right now have no official guidance on how to proceed with these claims. It also reports that an engineering team is currently investigating and trying to collect affected units.

What's breaking the iPhone Duo inner display

We covered iFixit's teardown recently that theorized some possible causes for the damage. The damage is appearing right above where the gap for the display cable meets the central hinge support. Specifically, iFixit's simulations suggest the center bar of the hinge may not be dropping low enough as the phone closes, which is likely that "bump" that affected owners are describing in their reports.

That tracks with the reports Bloomberg collected, describing that the hinge suddenly feels stiff or stuck, and that a bump or loose piece can be felt under the screen near where the crack starts. This is then followed by a crunch or cracking sound, and then lines form down the crease and the right side of the display.

What to do if your iPhone Duo is affected

According to Apple via this report, you should go through AppleCare to request a replacement, even if you bought your device through a carrier. You do not need the paid AppleCare+ for this process, as it is a defect.

If your iPhone Duo isn't affected but you suddenly start to feel that the hinge is getting stiff or you hear a crunch, do not try to continue opening it and contact AppleCare to get it looked at before it cracks.

Bloomberg's reports show the wait for a replacement unit can be long. This is backed up by a store confirming to a user that it had no stock available to provide a replacement unit on the spot. Apple support also told another user to mail in the damaged unit, even though a replacement was eventually express-shipped.

Not the best start for the iPhone Duo

Firstly, let's acknowledge the fact that Apple responded fairly quickly to this issue and is already replacing damaged units. However, I am still waiting on Apple to say how many units are actually affected and what is causing the damage. This will probably never happen, but one can hope.

If you are still on the fence about whether to buy an iPhone Duo, waiting a few more weeks for the initial returns to be processed and for more information on the cause to come through is probably a smart move.

Of course, there's always the Galaxy Z Fold 8 that you can opt for if you are just looking for a passport-sized foldable and don't care which operating system it runs. That said, I would love to see stores get a sizable batch of replacement stock, so that those affected are not forced to wait a week without their new phone.
