Credit where credit is due, the iPhone Duo launch was a breeze at Apple stores

The walk-in experience at Apple stores for customers wanting to buy an iPhone Duo was a lot better than early reports had claimed it would be.

When the iPhone Duo became available for pre-order, it was a mess. Scalpers cleared Apple out of inventory incredibly quickly and shipping dates for normal customers slipped into next year.

There were early reports that Apple was telling its physical stores to refuse walk-in customers unless they had a pre-ordered iPhone Duo. Credit where credit is due, clearly that wasn’t the case.

Apple optimized the launch as best it could

As Apple insider Mark Gurman points out in his newsletter Power On today, stores actually had a decent number of iPhone Duo units in stock for walk-in customers on launch day. This might not have been the case everywhere, but it was certainly true for quite a few places around the world.

With such limited stock, this is almost a miracle

iPhone Duo stock is relatively limited, hence why shipping dates for pre-orders have reached January of 2027. It’s also why Apple is requesting its suppliers to ramp up production of components to keep up with demand.

For the company to have still managed to stock its physical stores in so many locations regardless of inventory shortages is a pretty impressive feat of logistics. In fact, walk-in availability was so much higher than expected that some people started canceling their pre-orders to grab an iPhone Duo from a store instead.

The iPhone Duo launch did have its problems too

It hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows, however. The iPhone Duo apparently has some critical design flaw that is affecting quite a few units.

Any iPhone Duo models with this flaw are breaking mere hours after use, cracking right down the middle of the internal display over where the hinge is situated. The problem is widespread enough that some people began canceling their pre-orders out of fear.

Good to see but there’s more pressing matters

I was pleasantly surprised to see so many iPhone Duo units being sold to walk-in customers on launch day. Clearly, fears of there being no inventory left for physical stores were blown out of proportion.

However, right now Apple has much more pressing matters to attend to. The company is apparently shipping out broken Duos to California to study what went wrong. All I can say is I did warn you to stay away from a first-generation product.
