This year CES is pretty boring. However, there are few phones and tablet that I like: Xperia Z1C, Zenfone 5, Nubia 5S, Ascend Mate 2 and TabPRO 8.4.
Waiting for MWC.

CES is not meant for smartphone releases.. that's why we have a dedicated full expo for smartphones..
called Mobile world congress.. CES is all about latest technology excluding smartphones.. and if they showcased smartphones in ces then what would they show in MWC ?
but the most disappointing company this time was qualcomm .. last time they announced snapdragon 200,400,600,800 with many different chipset variants and parts ..
this time they didn't announce anything.. just repeated what was already announced earlier..

S800 has barely hit the street and its actually a beast and already they are working on S805, they cant make a huge jump every month you know. making stable and good chipset takes time and its good that there is some gap in between so that the software gets mature and use the chipset properly before jumping to the next model.

Maybe it was just me, but I was totally underwhelmed when it came to this year's smartphone releases at CES.....

Smartphones were very underwhelming (excluding the padfone) this year. However, there were tons of exciting tablets.

The title should best android phones and tablets.
Because there are some good tablets released with full Windows 8.
Thinkpad 8 with full windows 8 is better than any of these tablets mentioned above.
ASUS note 8 with wacom stylus, full windows 8 for $299 is great value.
Miix 10 with full HD display, 64 GB, keyboard dock, full windows 8 for $449 is another great choice.

I totally agree with you and so does the "Verge Web site" They gave the Lenovo Pro 8 Inch Windows 8.1 tablet "Best Tablet" because of the screen resolution. Case Build design and the fact you can run loads of Windows software, Hook it up to hundreds of USB devices and through HDMI hook it up your HDTV or HDMI monitor input.
