We're in a difficult moment for smartphone pricing. AI-driven demand has created a memory and storage chip shortage, and the costs are being passed down the chain to consumers. Nobody is immune – not Samsung, not Apple, not Google.

The question is how badly this will hit Samsung's flagship foldable lineup in 2026, coming on July 22.

This year's situation is a little more complex than usual, because Samsung isn't bringing just one new book-style foldable to the table. There's the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which is the true successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and a new, wider form-factor device that goes by Galaxy Z Fold 8 (or Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, depending on who you ask).

Here's what rumors and leaks are telling us so far.

How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup cost?

Let's start with the bad news: both phones are expected to be expensive.

Here's what we currently expect for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra:
*Starting price based on leaks; higher storage tiers are estimates based on the Z Fold 7's current pricing structure and have not been leaked.

It's important to note that the Galaxy Z Fold 7's pricing reflected in this table already includes the silent price hike Samsung made a few months ago.

Korean tipster Lanzuk, who has a solid track record with Samsung supply-chain leaks, posted a pricing breakdown suggesting retail channels in Asia and Europe have already locked in higher tags for the entire 2026 foldable family.

For the U.S., the numbers point to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra climbing past $2,100, which would make it Samsung's priciest mainstream phone yet, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) opening at around $1,800.

A separate report based on South Korean pricing corroborates this direction, showing the Ultra's local price rising by roughly 200,000 won over the Z Fold 7. That's additional confirmation of the trend, even if Korean prices don't translate directly to U.S. tags – Samsung sets regional pricing independently.

Pricing expected for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide):
*Starting price based on leaks; higher storage tiers are again estimated based on the Z Fold 7's current pricing structure.

If those expectations hold, the Wide could serve as Samsung's answer to buyers who want the foldable experience without going all the way to $2,200. It may also be Samsung's strategic play to capture buyers who might otherwise consider the foldable iPhone – more on that below.

How much did the Galaxy Z Fold 7 cost at launch?

To put all of this in context, here's how Samsung's foldable pricing has trended over recent generations at U.S. launch:

The trend speaks for itself. Samsung has raised the starting price of its flagship foldable by $100 with each new generation since the Fold 5. There's no reason to expect that trend to reverse with the Fold 8 Ultra – and the current memory market situation gives Samsung more cover than ever to justify the increase.

What's the competition doing?

The pricing picture gets more interesting when you zoom out to what the rest of the market is doing – because everyone is raising prices right now, and some increases are more dramatic than others.

Apple

Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed to The Wall Street Journal in June 2026 that price hikes are "unavoidable."

Research firm TechInsights estimates that to maintain its current profit margins, Apple could need to raise the iPhone 18 Pro's price by as much as $270, driven almost entirely by skyrocketing memory and storage chip costs – with component and manufacturing costs projected to rise around 25% compared to the iPhone 17 Pro.

The most likely outcome, per TechInsights, is an iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,299 or $1,399, up from the iPhone 17 Pro's $1,099.

As for the foldable iPhone, early rumors initially pointed to a more expensive device, but the latest leaks suggest it will be priced close to the Z Fold 8 Ultra:

  • Foldable iPhone starting price (rumored): $1,999

If that holds, Apple would actually undercut the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at launch – a remarkable and very un-Apple-like move.

Google

Google is also expected to raise prices with the Pixel 11 lineup, based on Amazon listings that briefly went live before being pulled – and which appear credible based on multiple corroborating sources – the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is expected to start at $1,899, up $100 from the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's launch price.

  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold starting price (rumored): $1,899
  • Pixel 10 Pro Fold starting price: $1,799

That keeps Google's foldable cheaper than Samsung's Ultra, though the gap is narrowing year over year.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 pricing: what are your options?

Foldable phones are expensive, and 2026 is making that worse across the board. Samsung isn't just hiking prices and walking away, though. According to leaks, the company is preparing a package of pre-order perks to cushion the impact: larger trade-in credits, free storage upgrades, and regional bundles are all reportedly in the mix.

Reservation bonuses are currently open ahead of the Unpacked even on July 22, 2026:

Beyond Samsung's own offers, carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile tend to put together competitive deals around major Samsung launches, including trade-in promotions and installment plans that can bring the monthly cost down significantly.

If you're coming from a recent Galaxy device in good condition, you could knock a meaningful chunk off the sticker price through either Samsung directly or your carrier.

Samsung's website is also worth watching during shopping events, where flagship foldables have historically received price reductions and enhanced trade-in values.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup worth the higher prices?

The honest answer is: it depends on which phone you're looking at – and where you're coming from.

For the Ultra, the price hike is easier to forgive than it might seem. This is shaping up to be one of the more substantive generational leaps the Fold line has seen in years: a 5,000 mAh battery with 45W charging is a long-overdue fix, the new Flex Titanium hinge is expected to deliver a near-invisible crease, and a possible S Pen return would be a meaningful addition.

If you're on a Fold 5 or 6, the case for upgrading is real. If you're already on a Fold 7, paying $100–$200 more for what's available gets harder to justify.

The Wide is a different conversation. At around $1,799, it's the more accessible of the two, and it's offering something genuinely new – a 4:3 tablet-like inner display and a form factor Samsung has never tried before.

The trade-off is a dual-camera system without a telephoto lens, which is a notable omission at this price. But for buyers who want a foldable that actually feels like a compact tablet, it may be the most interesting Samsung foldable in years.

What complicates things for both phones is the broader market context. Prices are going up everywhere – Apple, Google, and Samsung alike – so there's no obvious cheaper alternative waiting around the corner. That makes the pre-order deals and trade-in offers worth paying close attention to when the phones are officially unveiled on July 22.
