Samsung Galaxy A72 5G release date, price, features and news
Samsung has just released the successors of last year’s very popular midrangers, the A51 and the A71. We now have the Galaxy A72, a phone coming with major improvements over its predecessor in areas such as battery life, screen refresh rate, and camera. Currently, only the 4G version was announced by Samsung and we expect the 5G variant to hit the market around the summer, just like it happened with Galaxy A71. So, for now, we will look into the Galaxy A72 4G and what it brings to the table.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Release date

  • March 17, 2021
Today Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A72 and the Galaxy A52 mid-range phones. They are currently available for the European market and we expect them to hit the US shelves soon, and most likely will be available on all major carriers and also unlocked.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Price

As we mentioned earlier, the A72 is only available with 4G variant right now, and the European pricing is $449 (around $517). We will soon hear about the US prices and we’ll include this information here.

As far as the 5G version of the A72 is concerned, it hasn’t been announced yet and we expect it to show up sometime in the summer, available for both the European and the US markets.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Specs

Here are the Galaxy 72’s specifications:
  • 6.70-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ (1080×2400 pixels)
  • 90Hz display refresh rate
  • Quad-camera system with a 64MP main sensor with OIS, 32MP selfie
  • Plastic back
  • IP67 rating
  • Android 11
  • Snapdragon 720G (5G variant will reportedly feature Snapdragon 750G processor)
  • 128GB or 256GB
  • MicroSD card support
  • 6GB/8GB RAM
  • USB Type-C, 3.5mm headphone jack
  • 5,000mAh battery
  • 25W fast charging
These are the specifications that the Galaxy A72 sports, and we believe these are quite good specifications for a midrange phone. Especially, we will see improvement in the camera department and the screen refresh rate, which is a smooth 90Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Design

Renders of the Galaxy A72 have surfaced long before the phone was released, and now its here, confirming the fresh new design we were expecting.

The front panel of the Galaxy A72 looks quite pleasing and reminds us of a mixture between the Galaxy A52 and the premium Galaxy S21. The selfie camera is situated in a small, centered punch-hole, and the display is surrounded by relatively thin bezels with a bit bigger chin. The screen is flat, just like the Galaxy S21’s.

The display is 6.7-inches, and therefore the dimensions of the phone are 6.49 x 3.04 x 0.33 inches (165 x 77.4 x 8.4mm). As we mentioned earlier, the back of the phone is plastic and matte.

The camera bump houses 4 cameras, the main sensor being a 64MP one, equipped with OIS. To complement the main sensor, the phone rocks a 12MP ultra-wide cam, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a 5MP macro camera. For reference, the Galaxy A71 sports a 64MP primary shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide unit, a 5MP macro module, and a 5MP depth unit.

The phone comes in four colors: Awesome Black, Awesome White, Awesome Violet, and Awesome Blue.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Display

The Galaxy A72 5G shows very few changes in the design of the display from its predecessor Galaxy A71, which also sports a 6.7-inch display. We have a beautiful Super AMOLED Plus panel, complemented by a 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution, the so-called FullHD+ resolution, just like its predecessor. Of course, we don’t expect the resolution of the mid-range phone to match the premium Galaxy S21 Ultra, after all.

A major upgrade is the smooth 90Hz display refresh rate, which is the first time Samsung is introducing this fast refresh rate on its mid-range phones.

Being AMOLED, the Galaxy A72’s display is indeed sharp enough and beautiful, with deep blacks and rich, yet no over-saturated colors.

Samsung Galaxy A72 Camera

Although last year there were certain rumors that the 2021 Galaxy A72 will sport a penta-camera system, this has proven to be just speculation. Instead, the Galaxy A72 features a quad-camera setup, with the main sensor of 64MP that has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which assures fast focus in low light and videos. Additionally, the A72 brings about some exclusive features for the first time in a Samsung mid-ranger. More precisely, we are talking about space zoom (30x zoom) and 3x optical zoom, thanks to that 8MP telephoto lens. A 5MP macro and a 12MP ultra-wide cam complement the camera setup.

Just for context, the Galaxy A72’s predecessor, the A71, also has a quad-camera system on its back with a 64MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide, a 5MP macro camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. On the front, the phone sports a 32MP selfie shooter.

Samsung Galaxy A72 5G Processor & Memory

The 4G-only variant of the phone has previously been spotted in a Geekbench listing that revealed it will powered by Snapdragon 720G. And that turned out to be true. The processor is just slightly better than the one found in the A71, so no major improvements in this department.
The phone has base storage of 128GB and a variant with 256GB. Although Samsung removed the SD card from its Galaxy S21 flagship lineup, the SD card slot remains on the Galaxy A72, and so does the 3.5mm headphone jack.

As for the memory, the Galaxy A72 5G comes with 6 or 8GB of RAM, depending on the market, which is more than enough for your daily multitasking needs.

Samsung Galaxy A72 5G Battery life

The Galaxy A71 features a 4,500mAh battery cell, however, the A72 boasts a massive 5,000mAh battery cell. On top of that big battery cell, the phone supports up to 25W fast wired charging. Keep in mind that it comes with a 15W charger in the box, so if you want those blazing-fast charging speeds, you need to purchase the fast charger separately.
