If everything goes according to plan — and it seems like it will — then Apple will unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra next month. But though the company’s first-ever foldable flagship isn’t even available yet, Apple apparently already has two successors planned.

iPhone Ultra 3 will have larger displays

According to Apple insider Mark Gurman in his newsletter Power On, the iPhone Ultra 3 — which will come out in 2028 — will feature larger displays. This will be true for both the external as well as the internal displays of the phone.

Such a change would be welcome for some users as the current measurements of 5.5 and 7.8 inches for the external and internal displays respectively, though pretty decent, are smaller than some of the competition.

Interestingly, though, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has displays that are around the same sizes as well, with the main 7.6-inch display actually being smaller than Apple’s phone if leaked iPhone Ultra specs are accurate.

Two foldable iPhone models being planned

Though Apple doesn’t yet know whether the wide-folding design will take off, the company is still planning on releasing at least two successors to the iPhone Ultra. Next year’s Ultra will likely only see minor hardware upgrades and the iPhone Ultra 3 will get the aforementioned larger displays.

Judging from the popularity of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 8, however, I think that it’s safe to say that wide-folding foldables are here to stay. And if you’re an Android user through and through, then current pre-order deals for the Fold 8 might be just what you’re looking for.

An excellent time for foldable smartphones

With Apple entering the foldable smartphone market at long last, foldables are projected to hit a new level of popularity never seen before, especially in the U.S. And with so much consumer choice — Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, and now the iPhone Ultra — there has never been a better time to get into foldables.

That’s without even mentioning the plethora of foldable flagships being offered by other manufacturers or the recent advancements in display crease control.

Better late than never

Apple sure took its sweet time, and it didn’t entirely get rid of the display crease like it wanted to, but I’m very excited to see the company finally release a foldable iPhone. If nothing else, this has at least prompted Samsung to go into overdrive and start innovating like its life depends on it.

That’s just good news for customers in the end.
