The September Pixel Drop is here, and it unlocks a new look and a quieter safeguard

September's Pixel Drop is rolling out today, and it's Pixel-only, so it lands on eligible Pixel devices rather than Android at large. Six changes arrive across phones and watches, and nearly all of them reach back to the Pixel 6, not just the Pixel 11 Pro and the rest of the best Pixel phones.

Google announced the drop in a post on its blog, and the rollout starts today for supported Pixel phones, tablets and watches. There are six items in total, four on the phone side and two for the Pixel Watch.

It should be noted that this isn't the September Android Drop we covered two weeks ago. That one pushed five features out across Gemini, Find Hub and Google Messages for Android phones generally, while this is a Pixel Drop, so it only reaches eligible Pixel devices.



The Harry Potter packs will get most of the attention, of course, but the two Scam Detection expansions are the part of this drop that changes how the phone behaves day to day.

Scam Detection is still where Pixel pulls ahead of Galaxy and iPhone

The Pixel 6 came out in October 2021, and it still picks up the VIP widget work, both Scam Detection expansions and the theme packs from this drop. That's a five-year-old phone collecting nearly everything a Pixel 11 Pro gets today, which is the quiet argument for buying a Pixel that Google rarely makes out loud.

Where this leaves the competition is worth a look, since scam protection is the half of the drop with real stakes. Samsung got there in February, when the Galaxy S26 line picked up Scam Detection inside its own stock phone app, no Google Phone app required. However, it shipped off by default, limited to unknown numbers, and at the time it covered the US and English only, while Pixel was already running in far more countries.

Apple is further back still. We made the case in June that the iPhone has no real equivalent, and the security evaluations Google funded last year found Android covering nine areas to iOS's two. Those were paid for by Google, though, so read them with that in mind.
