What we know so far

If you are a fan of Google Pixel and curious about the next Pixel Watch, you are in the right place. The third-generation Pixel Watch is expected to debut alongside the upcoming flagship Pixel 9 series in October.

This year's Pixel Watch 3 is rumored to bring some major upgrades compared to earlier models. For one, it's expected to come in two different sizes. Additionally, it might boast a larger battery and potentially more sensors. The Pixel Watch 3 is also anticipated to run the latest version of Wear OS.

Now, let's dive into the rumors, leaks, and expectations surrounding this highly anticipated smartwatch. Keep an eye on this page, where we'll gather all the latest information about the Pixel Watch 3 in one place.

Pixel Watch 3 release date

Google released its first Pixel Watch alongside the Pixel 7 series in 2022, and the second generation made its debut with the Pixel 8 series last year. Given this pattern, it's highly likely that we might see the third Pixel Watch in October this year, along with the upcoming Pixel 9 series.

In recent years, Google has tended to hold its announcement event in the first week of October. If this trend continues in 2024, we can expect another event kicking off the month.

October is traditionally when the latest Android version is also unveiled, which means a plethora of exciting new software features and changes for all Android phone owners to look forward to, not just those with a Pixel device.

Check out the timeline below for a clear breakdown of when we can expect the Pixel Watch 3 to arrive.

Pixel Watch 3 price

Given that the release date is still several months away, it is a bit premature to pinpoint an exact price. However, if Google sticks to its pricing trends from previous models, we could expect the Pixel Watch 3 to come in at under $400. Specifically, around $350 for the Wi-Fi-only model and approximately $399 for the Wi-Fi+LTE variant.

Recent leaks suggest minimal design changes, but apparently, Google plans to add more size options which most certainly will lead to pricing variations across different versions. A new leak suggests that the Pixel Watch 3 XL could be priced as high as $499 in the US

Pixel Watch 3 design

When it comes to design, rumors suggest the Pixel Watch 3 is poised to introduce a welcome flexibility with two size options next fall. This shift away from the single 41mm size seen in the Pixel Watch 2 and the first-generation Pixel Watch aligns Google with current industry trends, following the example set by competitors such as Apple, Samsung, and Garmin.

Earlier reports suggest that the smartwatch will be available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. And as the official reveal date approaches, more leaks are surfacing. Recently, renders of the larger version dubbed the Pixel Watch 3 XL, have emerged

While the core design of the bigger Pixel Watch 3 remains consistent, there are notable updates. It might feature a 1.45-inch display, an increase from the 1.2-inch panel found on previous models. The larger display and a thicker body measuring 13.89mm suggest the possibility of a larger battery and potentially more sensors, although specific details are still limited. The overall dimensions of the watch body are reportedly 45mm x 45mm x 13.89mm.

Recently surfaced renders of the regular Pixel Watch 3 also show a striking resemblance to its predecessor, suggesting continuity in design language, meaning minimalist and elegant style. It is expected to be made out of aluminum, similar to the previous model. While aluminum is lighter than other materials, it may not be as strong, yet even a slight weight reduction can be noticeable on a watch.

Water resistance is likely to be a feature, matching the Pixel Watch 2's 5ATM rating—typical for premium smartwatches. To put it simply, the Google Pixel Watch 2 can be confidently used in a pool without concerns about water damage.

The upcoming Pixel Watch 3 is also expected to introduce a few new color options and be available in:

  • Hazel
  • Black
  • Silver
  • Rose Quartz.

Pixel Watch 3 display

As mentioned earlier, with the possibility of different sizes for the watch, the display sizes will also vary. The Pixel Watch 3 could potentially adopt the same display as its predecessors, featuring a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with 320ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The larger version is expected to feature a 1.45-inch display.

Moreover, both new Pixel Watch 3 models might feature a 2,000-nit display, doubling the Pixel Watch 2's maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. This upgrade should make the upcoming watches much easier to use outdoors in direct sunlight.

And that is not all, as both models of the Pixel Watch 3 might feature 4.5 mm bezels, an improvement over the 5.5 mm bezels on the previous model.

Pixel Watch 3 battery

Recent reports suggest that the smaller Pixel Watch 3 might retain its 306mAh battery that can last around 24 hours per charge with the always-on display enabled. The larger 45mm model could come with a 420mAh cell, offering a longer battery life.

In terms of charging, if past trends continue, the Pixel Watch 3 could achieve a 50% charge in 30 minutes or reach 80% in just 45 minutes. Just like with the Pixel Watch 2, we can expect the inclusion of the magnetic charging puck in the next generation, providing a secure hold for the watch during charging.

Additionally, this time around, battery life might see improvements due to software optimizations expected in the upcoming Wear OS 5.

Pixel Watch 3 features and software

The Pixel Watch 3 is anticipated to run the latest version of Wear OS. Which is it, you may wonder? Wear OS 5 is the next iteration, and Google already gave a sneak peek of Wear OS 5 during its recent I/O conference. So, let's see what it is all about:

  • Based on Android 14: A departure from Wear OS 4's reliance on Android 13 means improvements in performance, security, and compatibility with future Android features.
  • Focus on yearly updates: Aligning with a yearly update cycle similar to smartphones might keep Wear OS more competitive and up-to-date compared to its historical update pace.
  • Improved integration with Android and Google services: Anticipate tighter connections with notifications, messaging, Assistant functionality, and possibly cross-device features for controlling smart home devices from the watch.
  • Enhanced health and fitness features: Expect potential advancements in tracking workouts, sleep monitoring, and deeper integration with Google Fit.
  • Longer battery life: With battery optimization being a perpetual concern for smartwatches, Wear OS 5 introduces features and tweaks to enhance battery performance.

However, the real-world performance of Wear OS 5 features will only be confirmed once we've had the chance to test the wearable ourselves.

Should I wait for Pixel Watch 3?

  • You should wait for Pixel Watch 3 if you prefer a larger watch size, as it's rumored to come in a bigger size compared to the Pixel Watch 1 and 2. Additionally, if your current smartwatch is outdated and lacks the latest features, the Pixel Watch 3, with its Wear OS 5 and potential performance improvements, could be a worthwhile upgrade

  • You should not wait for Pixel Watch 3 if you're happy with your current Pixel Watch and don't need the rumored upgrades. Or if you need a smartwatch right away, you might be better off choosing between the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, as the third generation is still months away.
