The iPhone Duo launch did not, I think it’s fair to say now, go well. For many Apple fans, the iPhone Duo works just fine and has introduced them to the world of foldable smartphones. Others, however, are either still waiting on their Duo to arrive or are trying to get a replacement because their foldable iPhone broke after only a few hours of use.

However, Samsung has been having a blast making fun of the iPhone Duo. The entire situation has also given the company a brilliant chance to market its Galaxy Z Fold 8 as well, a stunt that seems to be working to an extent.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 handles apps better

One problem currently on the iPhone Duo is that apps need to be optimized for its layout one by one. Most apps waste screen space on the external display to maintain the aspect ratio of a standard candy bar phone which also leads to issues reaching across the shorter and wider display with just your thumb.
In a similar vein, most apps on the larger folding internal display currently also maintain the same aspect ratio as a standard iPhone. That completely defeats the point of having a foldable smartphone as most of the display is just blank.
Samsung was quick to point this out once more people got their hands on the iPhone Duo and the extent of the lack of app support became apparent. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has a similar layout as the iPhone Duo, does not have this problem as apps are able to scale flawlessly almost every time.

iPhone Duo breaks a lot too

App compatibility can eventually be fixed, however. What can’t be fixed with a software update is the hinge and its tendency to crack the inner display.
This critical design flaw — reportedly stemming from Apple lowering its quality control standards to procure more inventory for launch day — has led to many iPhone Duos breaking. The problem is so common that there are new posts on social media every day and customers keep seeing broken demo units in Apple stores.
Samsung has all but perfected foldable hinge design and it loved pointing that out. The company boasted about how you could keep folding and unfolding the Galaxy Z Fold 8 all day long without any worry.
Samsung was also deliberate enough to fold and unfold the Fold 8 in different ways. This, I think, was directed at the Apple fans who have been worrying about how precisely to open and close their iPhone Duo to prevent it from breaking. One popular theory, for example, advises users to not push into the inner display when folding.
Then Samsung took it even further and made fun of the iPhone Duo directly by showing the pattern that Apple’s foldable usually breaks in. The company mentioned how folding wasn’t anything new to it, letting the images do the talking.
Then, Samsung took it one step even further and rolled out mobile digital billboards across the cities of Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. A truck with a giant screen on the back roamed around the cities with the same strategy as Samsung’s Instagram post.

The billboards showed images of a display with the recognizable pattern of a broken iPhone Duo accompanied by the same tagline stating how folding was nothing new for Samsung. The ads also told people to switch to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Alright, Samsung, I can get behind this
Personally, I think that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a much better phone than the iPhone Duo for a myriad of reasons. | Image by PhoneArena
Sometimes Samsung takes it too far and its attempts to mock Apple come off as cringy instead of funny. This was especially true when the iPhone Duo was first being announced last month.
However, these ads poking fun at the iPhone Duo are something I can get behind. For starters, they don’t come off as desperate. Secondly, and more importantly, they are pointing out a genuine flaw with the iPhone Duo that deserves to be pointed out. Though that hasn’t stopped some others from still disliking Samsung’s marketing strategy.

Fortunately for Samsung, the iPhone Duo’s launch seems to have driven more attention to the Galaxy Z Fold 8. So these ads mocking Apple’s foldable are probably doing more than just making for a good story.
