The Nokia 6.1 Plus is the brand's 'most awaited' phone, Nokia 5.1 Plus also makes international debut
HMD Global unveiled its first iPhone X-inspired Nokia handset with a notch back in May, deciding to expand the X6 from its initial China exclusivity by popular demand. The mid-ranger, rebranded as the Nokia 6.1 Plus, kicked off its global rollout last month in Hong Kong, reaching the pivotal Indian market today as the company’s “most awaited phone.”
Unfortunately, that means we’ll have to continue waiting for a long overdue Nokia 9 flagship. If it makes you feel any better, the 6.1 Plus isn’t flying solo to India, bringing with it another China-first budget-friendly device with a notch.
As the name suggests, the Nokia 5.1 Plus, formerly known as the X5, is a slightly humbler phone than the Nokia 6.1 Plus, packing a MediaTek Helio P60 processor and 3GB RAM, compared to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and 4 gigs of memory.
The two devices have “secure and up-to-date” Android Oreo software in common, courtesy of Google's Android One program, as well as AI camera enhancements, although the 6.1 Plus features a superior 16MP primary rear-facing shooter. The Nokia 5.1 Plus combines 13 and 5MP cams, the latter of which is also found on the back of the 6.1 Plus for cool depth effects.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus is the better selfie taker as well, thanks to a 16MP front-facing snapper, compared to a 13MP imaging sensor housed by the larger notch on the 5.1 Plus. Both devices look surprisingly premium for their price bracket, with 2.5D curved glass on both the front and back, and something tells us we won’t have to wait long to see them released in Western Europe.
For the time being, we only know the exact price point of the Nokia 6.1 Plus in India. Namely, 15,999 rupees, equating to roughly $230, with regional sales underway on August 30. That's impressively affordable, and it includes a generous 64 gigs of internal storage space.

Interestingly, the 5.1 Plus comes with a considerably wider screen cutout, while the 19:9 displays themselves both measure around 5.8 inches in diagonal. However, there’s an important difference in resolution, as the Nokia 6.1 Plus delivers a Full HD+ pixel count (2280 x 1080), whereas the 5.1 Plus settles for modest HD+ numbers (1520 x 720).
