New Motorola RAZR (2019) concept is based on a recently published Lenovo patent

But in 2016, Motorola hinted that the phone might make a comeback by releasing a video showing a high school circa 2005. Of course, back then the RAZR was the must-have cellphone. The tongue-in-cheek video even showed how selfies could have been taken back in the day. As talk about foldable phones started to pick up, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing hinted at MWC 2018 that the RAZR was making a comeback. And this past January, a Wall Street Journal story said that the clamshell would return as a foldable Android-powered smartphone, priced at $1,500. The story also noted that the RAZR will be a Verizon exclusive. 

Since then, we've seen a concept video based on patents that Motorola has received, and last month a list of rumored specs was leaked, proving to be somewhat disappointing. According to this leak, the Motorola RAZR (2019) will feature a screen that when opened, weighs in at 6.2-inches. With a resolution of 876 x 2142, the 22:9 aspect ratio results in a taller and thinner screen than even the one on the new Sony Xperia 1. The external display is said to carry a 600 x 800 resolution for a 4:3 aspect ratio. Instead of powering the phone with Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, this leak says that Motorola opted to keep the price of the phone down by having it powered by the Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform.

Still, rumors are rumors and there is always the possibility that the Motorola RAZR (2019) is more like the device seen in a new concept video made by TechConfigurations. This would be a more premium model with a triple camera setup in back (48MP + 20MP + 16MP), an edge-to-edge 7.5-inch display when fully opened, and a hidden vibrating speaker. This RAZR concept features an in-display fingerprint scanner and would be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform. A 5500mAh battery would be in charge of keeping the lights on.

When this concept version of the RAZR (20219) is folded, a small 3-inch screen is available on the back of the unit right under the rear camera. And in front, there would be a 4-inch display that also could be employed. A 3.5mm headphone jack is included.

As cool as this concept appears, such a device would cost more than the $1,500 that the RAZR (2019) is expected to be priced at. On the other hand, a patent awarded to Motorola parent Lenovo for a foldable phone shows a design very similar to what you'll see in the video at the top of this article. Perhaps this concept version of the Motorola RAZR (2019) will be closer to the real thing than we might expect.
