LG reveals 5 inch smartphone screen with Retina display besting pixel density of 440ppi

LG's new 5 inch display has a higher pixel density than the Apple iPhone 4 and 4S |
The new panel has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and is a major improvement over the previous 4.5 inch panel which had 720p resolution and pixel density of 329ppi. Additionally, the new 5 inch display is 2.2 times denser in pixels and offers 30% more pixels per inch. And the AH-IPS technology used on the display makes individual pixels impossible for the naked eye to pick out allowing for precise reproduction of color. You might think that a panel that offers a brighter display would use more battery power, but no, that is not the case with the new LG display. The screen consumes less battery power than other displays in its class. The display will be released during the second half of this year.

With so great pixel density, it could be possible to watch HD movies in same way we watch them on a big screen by using an accessory in form of special magnifying glasses in which you could place your smartphone as a image source.
Long time ago we used to do this with photo slides by viewing them with pocket magnifier. Slides have extreme image density - about 20 Mpix worth of detail on a 35 mm format, and with these magnifying glasses it gives an impression we are watching wall-projected image of couple of meters in diagonal and couple of meters away from us.
With this kind of high-density screen, similar possibility could emerge.

the more pixels in a display,the more clearer and crisper images.so smartphones have started beating up computer hd displays and hd televisions.i want to see this in computer hd displays and hd televisions too.smartphone techonolgies are really smarter than that of computer desktop technologies.i think so smartphones are diverting attention of manufacturers and consumers from that of desktops and laptops,because they are more innovative.

There are many reasons why this high-density thing didn't came to desktop PCs and HDTVs.
There were extremely high PPI desktop monitors even 10 years ago, but industry rejected them because of hardware limitations.
The greatest reason is that OS-es are not designed for scalable densities and other reason is that gaming industry would suffer as there are not many graphic processors to fluidly drive modern games on such extreme resolution that aren't even supported yet.
For pixel density above 300 PPI on a 24" screen, you need extreme resolution that surpasses 25 megapixels (for instance 7680x4320 px) - no way you can drive that with commercial graphics processors.

IT industry is very slow and inert when it comes to this. I was questioning myself that question for almost a decade - why the hell they don't employ greater resolution and, even more important, why they didn't implement IPS or VA screen technologies where they needed the most?
The answer is - market situation, that reflects the industrial and technological capacities.
Apple changed that, but only because it outsell anything before it, and therfore Industry was forced to follow it. Now it looks like Apple is great inventor, but it isn't. It just has the power (seductive one) to set new standards for Industry.

it really doesnt mean that a smartphone is smarter than a laptop because of ppi's remember, not even the most advance smartphone today, like SGS3, can match a laptop when it comes to multitask.

maybe, but with higher ppi comes crisper image, and it ads a sense of depth to pictures on screen so it looks 3D-ish, it should look astonishing, specially because it is IPS LCD with 440 ppi :D

Even Samsung revealed flexible displays, but it haven't make it to the devices yet, so let's not be too excited with this because by the time it releases, it may be a standard for flagship phones to have screen resolutions above 400 ppi.

LG might end up becoming a serious contender this year if the company ends up releasing a smartphone in the Fall using one of these screens, along with 2 gb of RAM.

I bet that screen is gonna be pretty.
I doubt we need that much PPI at 5 inches, but if it comes with reduced power over current tech, ill take it. However, this better only come with top end A15 chips or its going to start eating up framerates.
