Samsung's real-world Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra battery life numbers might blow your mind

We obviously don't know how long Samsung's next-gen foldables will last between charges for actual users, but we're starting to get a pretty good idea.

Will Samsung be able to keep anything a secret up until the big Unpacked event of July 22? It certainly doesn't look that way, as just in the last few days, the company's three unannounced foldable devices and two upcoming smartwatches have smiled for us in glorious press-friendly renders before every single Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra specification was either revealed or confirmed by one of the world's most trustworthy leakers.

Believe it or not, that still didn't tell the full story of the Z Fold 7's two sequels, so it's definitely nice (for us and likely terribly unpleasant for Samsung) to see another key puzzle piece fall into place today.

The Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra should provide more than two days of battery life

If you've used... any phone before, you probably already know objectively and accurately estimating its battery endurance can be tricky, as it depends on a great deal of highly subjective factors. Device manufacturers will often overestimate a handset's battery life numbers, while our battery test results, for instance, are obviously 100 percent neutral and unbiased (scout's honor!), but because you've learned to question everything you read online (which is generally a good thing), some of you might not find them trustworthy enough.

Thankfully, that's where the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) comes in, aiming to provide a European Commission-regulated tool for evaluating the energy and environmental performance of products as diverse as washing machines, refrigerators, tyres, air conditioners, and of course, smartphones and tablets based on a unified testing methodology.

As far as battery endurance is concerned, said methodology tries to replicate a "real world" user experience as faithfully as possible, mixing web browsing, video playback, streaming, gaming, voice calls, messaging, and standby to obtain these results:

  • Galaxy Z Fold 8 - 49 hours and 10 minutes;
  • Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra - 51 hours;
  • Galaxy Z Fold 7 - 40 hours and 28 minutes.

Those are much bigger improvements than expected

Yes, it appears that the Z Fold 8 (Wide) will offer almost nine hours of extra juice between charges compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, while the super-premium Z Fold 8 Ultra could gain more than ten hours and a half on its non-Ultra-branded predecessor.

That would represent an upgrade of over 25 percent in "real-world" battery life for Samsung's best 2026 foldable compared to last year's only book-style Z-series release, which is a pretty surprising number. That's because the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra are widely expected to pack 4,800 and 5,000mAh battery capacity, respectively, which sounded like decent but not exactly earth-shattering figures prior to today.

Will you be sold on the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra if these battery life numbers prove accurate?

The Z Fold 7, remember, comes with 4,400mAh cell capacity, so from that particular standpoint, the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra are only set to bring 9 and 13 percent upgrades to the table, respectively. Clearly, Samsung's software magic and the superior frugality of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor are at play here, making something that didn't seem possible almost guaranteed at this point.

How will the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra compare to the competition?

Unfortunately, it's not easy to find the battery endurance scores of all the best foldable phones in the world right now in the EPREL database. But after doing a little digging, I've managed to come up with this short but handy list:

As you can see, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 duo should be able to crush one of its (European) rivals (which, by the way, packs a gargantuan 5,600mAh battery) while narrowly beating Google's latest foldable giant (which is expected to be replaced soon by a newer and theoretically improved model with a smaller battery for some reason).

But then there's the Razr Fold, which will apparently eclipse Samsung's next-gen book-style powerhouses thanks to a super-hefty 6,000mAh cell and a slower but more energy-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC.

Motorola's rookie book-style foldable effort actually failed to impress us or defeat the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in our battery testing, so if you'll allow me, I will continue to believe that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra have every chance to become the best foldables in the world... at least until Apple's iPhone Ultra also enters the arena.
