While REDMI is known for making phones with massive and reliable batteries, the latest REDMI Note 17 Pro Max smashed through our expectations, and delivered probably the biggest battery on a “mainstream” phone we’ve seen.

Now, I must make it a point to mention that the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max isn’t any thicker or heavier than your regular smartphone out there. Yet it packs a 9,210 mAh battery. Yeah, not a typo, I double-checked.

Of course, we were quite eager to see how it fares in terms of longevity here at the office. So we put it through all three rings of our proprietary battery life testing. Here are the results:

Our browsing test simulates website loading, scrolling, and then reloading at a set period. It’s a very good expression of how a smartphone would fare during “regular” everyday use — some chatting, some social media, some news browsing and research.

33 hours of on time for those tasks means that the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max can easily last you two maybe even three days if you are not into heavy multimedia usage.

But even if you are, it still managed to stay on for 18 hours on our YouTube binge playtest. So, even if all you do on your phone is watch videos and shows, you can still expect it to last well into day 2 (Assuming you put it in standby when you sleep. You do sleep, yes?).

Needless to say, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max easily goes to the top of our battery endurance leaderboard, and begs the question — will any phone in 2027 come close?

A new generation of Silicon-Carbon battery

Obviously, this massive battery capacity in a regular phone body is thanks to the battery being Si/C. But we’ve seen Silicon-carbon batteries in phones before, none have hit this 9000+ mAh threshold. What’s new here?

If you will allow me to get technical for a few moments. Silicone molecules are much better at retaining and transporting energy than the graphite material used in regular Li-ion batteries. That’s what allows for the increase in capacity.

However, silicon also has the tendency to expand rapidly during charging — up to 300% in size. Obviously, this isn’t great. Which is why Si/C was invented — a small amount of silicon molecules are embedded in a carbon scaffolding or matrix.

Typical smartphone Si/C batteries will have about 10-15% of silicon in them. The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max pushes the envelope to 16% with a new type of carbon matrix. Instead of the old blocky build, REDMI has developed a spherical “cage” made with carbon and graphite to hold the silicon particles at bay. The spherical shape is better-suited at resisting higher amounts of pressure, thus REDMI was capable to push the limits of battery capacity.

Lastly, REDMI also thought about battery longevity concerns. The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max’s battery is rated to retain 80% of its capacity after 1,000 complete charging cycles. Considering how long a single charge lasts, this easily corresponds to 6 years of usage.

REDMI suggests users make sure that the Intelligent Charging and Smart Charging toggles are on within the phone’s battery settings. Presuming normal usage, this should last you a good 6 years before you even need to think about battery replacement.

The phone even has its own power management chip. The Xiaomi Surge G2 co-processor is there to give you accurate real-time data on the battery status. No more surprise shutdowns when the phone shows that you should still have 5% of juice left.

A massive battery deserves a fast charger

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max comes with a 100 W HyperCharge adapter, which is a godsend when you consider you have a pretty massive battery to top up! Just 20 minutes on the wire will give you enough juice to go on for a full busy day.
