Sprint announces Tri-band LTE models
We told you the other day about an FCC filing for a Sprint Tri-band LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. That phone has not yet been announced by Sprint. But the carrier on Wedneday did announce a number of Sprint branded handsets that will be compatible with the enhanced LTE service which is being called Sprint Spark. The technology allows the circuitry in the phone to decide which of three LTE bands is perfect for a specific activity. This all happens in the blink of an eye, but can mean faster network speeds and better in-building coverage.
The phones will become Sprint Spark compatible starting November 8th.with the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini which will be compatible with the Tri-LTE bands right out of the box. The other phones will require a software update and includes the LG G2 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. Later on this year, a software update will make the HTC One max work with Sprint Spark.
Three Sprint mobile HotSpots are already compatible with Sprint Spark such as the Netgear Zing Mobile HotSpot, Netgear 341U USB Modem and the MiFi 500 LTE by Novatel.
The first cities that will offer the Tri-band LTE service have been announced by Sprint and will be New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. By the end of 2014, Sprint expects Sprint Spark coverage to reach 100 million Americans.
