Screenshots from new WhatsApp UI show calling feature in place
Screenshots from a Reddit user reveal that messaging app WhatsApp is ready to introduce the long awaited calling feature to its Android app. Based on the images posted by pradnesh07, WhatsApp plans on using an invitation system where one user with the feature places a voice call to another WhatsApp user, and the latter is then able to make voice calls using the app. In addition to adding support for voice calls, the update brings the Material Design look to WhatsApp.

The update is not available from the Google Play Store, which means that you must get the apk from WhatsApp. You can find it at the sourcelink. The 18.52MB file requires Android 2.1 or higher. However, to get the calling feature, you need to be running Android 4.4 or higher.

Another Reddit user, Tropiux, has revealed how to use the feature without getting an invite. "Go to terminal...insert this command with root privileges...am start -n com.whatsapp/com.whatsapp.HomeActivity." You will have to do this every time you want to make a call. Once you are enabled, call someone with the latest version of the app. That will enable his WhatsApp calling feature, and once he calls you, your app will be permanently enabled.

Eventually, the Google Play Store should have the version of WhatsApp "in stock" with the voice call capability.

Thanks for the tip!

Material? It's owned by Facebook and Facebook has used iOS design for awhile. The circled contact thumbnails started in iOS 7 and Facebook copied that to all OS's for it's messenger. I miss the square thumbnails. Now Whatsapp is getting the plague. I'm not sure why Android decided to change to it in Lollipop. Leave me alone circled thumbnails!

You are not there only one. In any case, these apps are unnecessary. Unless, you don't have unlimited text or each party live in different countriy. Otherwise, gosms or chomp good enough.

In india, almost all my contacts have HIKE. But the fact that whatsapp is reachable to even asha, symbian and windows plus some few other platforms where HIKE could never reach. But seriously hike is way better

Ya.. I too feel that whatsapp is ruining its uniqueness. By adding this feature its becoming an another messenger app with such fancy things like calls, stickers

Hike is much better than whatsapp..its just that its not famous. Hence people don't try it out.

Forced to try Whatsapp because some friends were using it, I knew it was bad but I didn't know it was so feature-devoid bad.

Same thing over here, feel HIKE is really a step above WATSAPP. But forced to use WATSAPP due the only fact being, that a considerable majority of my contacts use only WATSAPP.

The irony.

Honestly I have a few calling features such as talkray and viber to keep in touch with friends that live overseas. I have called a few using the new whatsapp call feature and the quality is better than any of the others. Calls are completely clear with little interference or lag time. It is actually better than even calling directly on my phone.
