Is the iPhone weeks away from a Sprint launch?
Is the iPhone weeks away from a Sprint launch?
Throughout this weekend, a whisper started low, gradually growing louder and louder until we could not let it go by without passing it along. The speculation is that Sprint is about to launch a CDMA version of the next generation iPhone. And while certainly far from an official announcement, a Best Buy employee working at a store in Pennsylvania has sent e-mails to The Tech Update saying that Apple's touchscreen device will be offered by Sprint starting next month. According to the Best Buy employee, a shelf display for the handset is coming next week. Now, we can probably think of some very good reasons why this story sounds bogus. Sprint is on the verge of launching the most important phone in its history, so getting involved with the iPhone right now doesn't make sense. On the other hand, where there is smoke, there is fire and talk of a Sprint branded iPhone was sparking all weekend.

Well it does make sense but I guess we'll find out soon enough huh? And I think by no means would this sway a great deal of potential EVO buyers.

2. ajac09 posted on 24 May 2010, 07:55

I call bullshit till we see real proof sorry I read the orginal website who leaked this and I call bull shit. Why? THEIR IS NO PROOF

11. SellPhones82 posted on 24 May 2010, 10:01

I with ya...how a BB emplyee "can confirm" this before anyone else does not add up. If he said it's a VZW iPhone it would be much more believable.

13. Hello-dirt posted on 24 May 2010, 10:10

I am not saying "it is so", but I did mention this back when the iphone was stated as 4g. It only makes sense that a 4g phone would go to a 4g network. And, given the state of Sprint, apple would be able to get wa more from them than they could from verizon; Sprint would be easier to manipulate. I still will not own an Iphone due to their lack of multitasking. I know it is suppose to have multitasking, but compared to the pain-in-the-ass-to-learn windows platform, it should not be called mutitasking.

21. BlackberryUser posted on 24 May 2010, 11:28

I don't think it's going to happen, but Hello-dirt is on to something. If Apple was truely trying to battle the EVO, then why not put it on the same network.

30. CRICKETownz posted on 24 May 2010, 12:05

Why would it be more believable if it was about VZW?

3. WnnaFghtAboutIt posted on 24 May 2010, 08:03

i declare shenanigans....apple already had a taste of its baby getting blasted for a network not being able to keep up....think they want round 2 of that?

4. secondcor517 posted on 24 May 2010, 08:10

I agree! SHENANIGANS!!!

5. Jojofromdabay posted on 24 May 2010, 08:11

You Are So Right now if this were true I expect T-mobile verizon to get a piece of the pie too .

6. sprintguy09 posted on 24 May 2010, 08:43

T-mobile's service is worse the AT&T i would hope T-mobile wouldnt get a piece of that pie I would say sprint and Verizon if this were true

7. scottmbolt (unregistered) posted on 24 May 2010, 08:53

Just another bull shit story by i-PhoneArena!

9. mr. anderson posted on 24 May 2010, 09:07

while the store is definitely bullshit, you do realize it isnt coming from phonearena right? thats why they have that little source link at the end. dumbass...

22. BlackberryUser posted on 24 May 2010, 11:29

I usually call bad reporting on PA, but I think this is good reporting. Had they passed up this article they would have people bitching because another news agency reported it.

35. scottmbolt (unregistered) posted on 24 May 2010, 12:58

hey dick-wad Anderson... yes there is a link at the end of it, but i-phonearena posted it on their own website, not the people who created the original link, you fucking twat. Every i-phonearena story has a source link to it, because they let other web sites do real reporting, and than they tap off of it. You dumb knob. Stfu and go back to bed.

36. easytochris posted on 24 May 2010, 13:36

seriously? you're going to get all butt hurt over someone correcting you? on the internet? what are you, 11?

42. DonkeyPunched posted on 24 May 2010, 17:12

scott, you also do realize there are more android announcements than there are iPhone ones currently?the whole website is flooded with android posts, when we occasionally, compared to android, see an iPhone post of some information that comes across. Also, learn to use twat in the right context. You really do sound like a dumbass. When challenged against your post, you, someone made into looking like a twat, calling someone else a twat clearly shows you don't understand how to use the word or even the meaning and instead sound like an 11 year old (source: easytochris) trying to throw words out of his mouth after being heard on television. Please, grow up.

fuck you too, ya prick!

8. tokuzumi posted on 24 May 2010, 08:54

This goes under the "I'll believe it when I see it" file....

10. SprintPimp posted on 24 May 2010, 09:47

You'd think this would read "Is the iPhone weeks away from a VERIZON launch?" considering they dont have a phone with a front facing camera yet. I dont see sprint picking up the i-phone when they are about to drop the EVO 4G on the 4th but i think it would be a big win for the cell phone industry. My MAIN complaint about the US cell phone market is that u cant get certain phones on every carrier. To be honest the I-Phone should have been one of those phones that EVERYBODY got a piece of. Truth or not Im getting the EVO. F*CK an I-Phone

39. paynekiller posted on 24 May 2010, 14:43

actually, it would make sense for it to go on sprint to expand their front-facing camera phone base so they can promote video calling, something that is LONG LONG overdue in the US. From what I know, the EVO will be the first phone in the US to have 2 cameras, and for the moment it will be the only one, so who will you be able to make a video call to unless you know they have an Evo too? The iphone4 would be able to pick up on all the other apple fanatics and techies that have been wait for such a feature but didnt want an android phone. That's what makes sense to me at least, it's sorta illogical to be trickling out phones with such a feature that only America is so far behind on 1 phone per carrier at a time.

48. Sellcell posted on 26 May 2010, 19:59

I might add too, that Sprint has been talking about acquiring the iPhone and it wouldn't surprise me if they kept it hush hush based on how much they're advertising the EVO. The thing is that we all know how many rumors there are about the iphone and it going to other carriers blah blah blah.

12. RCM posted on 24 May 2010, 10:06

Perhaps guerilla marketing tactics to dampen EVO sales by promoting a rumor that the iPhone is coming to Sprint. I don't think it will work, though, as the EVO appears to have specs superior even to those of the alleged "4G" iPhone.

24. BlackberryUser posted on 24 May 2010, 11:30

Very possible, some people are Apple fan boys.

14. desertmike680 posted on 24 May 2010, 10:15

This is ridiculous. As a Sprint employee, we would have known this in January at the CES show. The EVO is Iphone thats launching on the 4th.

37. easytochris posted on 24 May 2010, 13:40

i doubt it would have been announced at ces. Apple/Steve Jobs have been very consistent in announcing things at WWDC and Apple created announcements. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple waited until a few days after the launch of the EVO to say "we're dropping the next generation of iphone on sprint" because there are enough people that will wait to upgrade their phone to see what Jobs has to say to see if it's worth their time.

15. DOGIEFRESH posted on 24 May 2010, 10:21

Wow now is Sprint on the map, this Iphone rumours is taking those fanboys out of reality.....!!!!!

16. Mateo8326 posted on 24 May 2010, 10:41

That best buy employee should be fired lol

46. ostranderterry posted on 25 May 2010, 13:12

agreed

49. Sellcell posted on 26 May 2010, 20:01

what do best buy mobile employees know anyways?

17. scorpio85 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:02

I dont know if you guys heard, but Cricket is getting the iPhone on June 24th. ssshhhh dont leak this! lol

25. networkdood posted on 24 May 2010, 11:31

Actually, LEAP wireless is getting the iBONE on 7/4/10

18. phone333 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:18

Sprint iPhone or not.... doesn't matter. . EVO forever

19. pochi85 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:22

You know whats funny? How so many people come here and complain how phone arena sucks sooo bad but then again why you keep coming back here to check on the news here? Do you not have a life or something if it sucks dont come here and read the stuff that is posted here. Another thing where are ya people from cause i travel back and fourth from NJ to NY and my Sprint service doesnt let me down at all and so for customer service goes AMAZING !! two best networks are Verizon (verizon just gets to much money coming from there cable network which is y they can put so much money into there network) and Sprint but if a Iphone 4G would come out doesnt make since to give it to Sprint who is doing much better then b4 but i dont think its tru since HTC EVO 4G is coming out which will destroy all other phones out now

20. networkdood posted on 24 May 2010, 11:24

ok, for you peoples who still cling to hope of an VERIZON IPHONE - it will not happen in 2010 and most likely will not be available until 2012. APPLE will be producing a CDMA phone.....in the ASIAN markets where there is huge demand for it. It is a 5-yr contract - always was - LTE will not be a viable network until at least 2012, so why would apple build one for verizon on the rickety cdma network. Eventually, APPLE will produce an iphone with other companies - it is bound to happen. No big deal as many of us want an awesome ANDROID phone. And, right now AT&T has jack for that phone type.

23. networkdood posted on 24 May 2010, 11:30

If Verizon is not getting an iphone then why would SPRINT get an IPHONE, unless SPRINT heavliy subsidized it.....this will not happen for 2-4 years, if it does.

26. jrcrow79 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:51

ahahah! This phone is a week from being unable to chat n surf the web at the same time when you need!..lmao!

29. jbroots3 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:58

if said phone was a 4g phone, engadget already approved that Sprints Evo supports both chat and web at the same time... i still think its a bogus report, but you also have bogus info

27. rwolf1984 posted on 24 May 2010, 11:54

ummm, i dont think that Apple would put the iPhone on Sprint...if you could get the iPhone for 69.99 that would be amazing, but i do not think Apple would do that to AT&T...I am not sure how much Android Sprint sells, but this could hurt AT&T and kill AT&T...it could be a kamikaze move and although i think AT&T and Verizon have better networks I'd be tempted to switch to Sprint. Actually, I wouldn't be tempted...I think I just would. I still wanna see how the coming Android handsets work out for AT&T...we will see in a couple weeks...this is exciting!

38. easytochris posted on 24 May 2010, 13:44

The problem with the android handsets that come to AT&T is that they get crippled by not allowing non-market apps installed, and preinstalled bloatware that you cant remove. AT&T has done all of this to please Apple so they keep their contract. I would like to see the iphone go to another carrier because maybe at&t would stop feeling the need to cripple their android phones and maybe they will get a few good ones.

28. jpropin posted on 24 May 2010, 11:56

I don't care if the EVO or iPhone mixed my cocktails, paid my bills and walked the dog, I still would'nt enter into a contract with Sprint. There's a reason why they have been losing customers hand over first for the last several years. And it isn't just cause people think their phones were crappy.....LOL

31. BlackberryUser posted on 24 May 2010, 12:15

They've improved a lot recently.

32. networkdood posted on 24 May 2010, 12:28

I like the IPHONE but would prefer EVO

33. jpropin posted on 24 May 2010, 12:31

Thats cool that they have improved. Hopefuly they will realize it will take more than just cool phones to start rebuilding their subscriber base and bring back some of the customers they have lost over the last few years. As well as expand with new customers. Choice is always a good thing and whenever a company starts to teter, it reduces our choices. Just check out the banking industry for a good example.....LOL

34. networkdood posted on 24 May 2010, 12:54

Another myth is that the next iphone is 4G....it will be 4th Generation - thus the name 4G, that is all. Should be a speedier phone, though, with 1Ghz processor.

41. theGodpapa posted on 24 May 2010, 15:33

yeah 1ghz is fast....it is just sad that once an innovator of technology, now they are the ones playing catch up

40. theGodpapa posted on 24 May 2010, 15:32

I want all 34 seconds I took in reading this load of horse crap back in my life immediately Iphonearena....once again I completely wasted time by reading your fabrication with no actual REAL factual information supporting this fib!!!

44. wade1968 posted on 24 May 2010, 20:39

when the sprint evo launched with disney movies on it i said hey what do sprint and disney now have in common? steve jobs no one listens jobs is the majority stock holder in disney and now he has part of sprint its business own sprint and put Iphone on it and make it jobs next big hit.

47. wade1968 posted on 25 May 2010, 19:26

sorry guess i didn't make my point clear steve jobs may be buying sprint then he would have his own cell phone company to do it his way. how many at&t customers would walk from AT&T if sprint and iphone was owned by steve jobs?

45. QWIKSTRIKE posted on 24 May 2010, 21:13

so what....if iPhone came to Sprint I wouldnt want that thing....I'd wait for win7 phone personallly on a hd2 type phone or TP3!
