Apple iPad 2 breaks cover: dual-core 1GHz A5 chip inside, 33 percent thinner than iPad
Ladies and gents, one of the most anticipated devices of the year, the iPad 2, was finally unveiled by Apple's very own Steve Jobs who appeared on stage winning thunderous applause. We're glad to see one of the most influential CEOs in good health, but we're also happy to see Apple bring out the next iPad 2 with a mighty dual-core A5 chipset clocked at 1GHz and with a 33% thinner body. The second-gen iPad's body measures at the razing sharp 0.34 inches (8.8mm) of depth, significantly less than the original iPad's 13.4mm. Yes, folks, it's even thinner than the iPhone 4 and it will weigh 1.3 pounds now. We know what you are all wondering now - the release date! No need to worry - March 11th is the official release date for the U.S. market, while another 26 countries will get it on March 25th. But before we jump into more details, don't forget that you can check out our brief comparison of the specs of Apple's original iPad and the new iPad 2.

The iPad 2 will come in black or white

The iPad 2 will come in black or white

Did we mention it will come in white as well as black from day one? Steve Jobs made sure to underline that the second-gen iPad will be the first dual-core tablet to ship "in volume" - so much for the rumors about component shortages, right? Performance-wise the A5 chip will bring double the processing speed of the original iPad and up to 9 times the graphical power. All of this won't compromise battery performance according to Jobs as the chip has the same low power consumption as the one on the A4 used on the iPad. And yes, that means the same good 10 hours of battery life you enjoyed on the first-gen tablet. The 9.7-inch screen size and the 1024 x 768 resolution remain unchanged, but this time the tablet is even better equipped for hardcore gaming with a built-in gyroscope.

The slate will come with both front (VGA) and rear-facing cameras for video chat and the photo enthusiasts out there. At such a light weight you might rethink the weirdness of carrying a huge tablet to shoot pictures - after all the camera on the back is capable of 720p HD recording. You can also easily transfer photos and videos of up 1080p full HD resolution with the new HDMI mirrored video output, which works with all apps. In addition, the iPad 2 will charge even while you watch movies via HDMI. Unfortunately, the cable would cost you $39 and you'll need an optional adapter, but hey - nothing surprising from Apple here, right?

Steve Jobs says he didn't like the original iPad's cases which only made the tablet bulkier. How about a new Smart Cover, which was tailor-made to fit alongside the product and doubles as a stand. Just bend and fold the thin cover to turn the tablet into a stand and don't worry about cleaning your iPad 2 - the micro-fiber lining does that when you open it. It also comes in a polyurethane ($39) and leather ($69) versions with 5 colors for each one of them. It also wakes the tablet on opening and puts it to sleep when it's inside.

What's a tablet without the apps? Cupertino has a lot of them, but some of the most notable additions include FaceTime for video chats, the self-explanatory Photo Booth and the useful Find My iPad app. All of this will run on iOS 4.3, but to learn about the highlights of the updated iOS take a look here.

Finally, the iPad still has an extremely competitive price when compared to the competition and the second one won't be an exception - the Wi-Fi version comes at the same price tag of $499 for 16GB of storage. Add to that the fact that U.S. biggest carriers AT&T and Verizon will offer it from day one and you have a sweet deal. Sprint and T-Mobile? Sorry folks, it seems they are not getting the iPad 2 initially. Take a look at the prices per model and memory capacity below:

Should we say Apple stock jumped right after the announcement? The new iPad seems to fulfil many dreams, let us know your thoughts about it!

If flash is that important for you, then get an android device. The ipad and the iphone will never support flash. But obviously, a lot of users just get along fine without flash.

True, flash is entirely useless as only half of the internet uses it. Enjoy seeing "flash plug-in required" on your giant ipod touch for the vision impaired.

Flash kills battery life and is an unnecessary security risk. Flash videos don't even play properly on mobile device unless they've been optimized for mobile, which defeats the point of using Flash in the first place.

Flash had its time, but it's over

And Verizon Wireless can't even give you a clue as to when the Thunderbolt by HTC is being released. Gotta love Apple for their innovation and their pursuit of being number one. This product has been hush, hush, although rumored, but a release next week. Verizon Wireless needs to mirror this marketing effort by Apple.

No wonder people have such a hate on for Steve Jobs. He built a company that can produce things that people want and others can only envy. Bill Gates probably summed it up best when he described how he felt when he saw the released 1st gen iPhone (I am paraphrasing) - why couldn't we develop something like that....

To all of the Apple/Steve haters out there - give up the hate.

Since when has business ever been about ethics? It's unethical, for example, to sell a device to someone with a two year contract when you very well know that there's a better model coming up in 1-2 months. Thats wrong and every company does that! Apple is not the only unethical company. It's just much easier to pick on them because they're always in the spotlight.

Unethical to knock $300+ off of the devices cost for a two year contract on devices... Yeah, casue plenty of people would shell out $500+ every other month for that brand new device when the model they have still fits their needs. Your argument is ignorant. Simple

hello dick the reason the thunderbolt got pushed back is due to battery and skype issues. No way our we bringing our first 4g LTE phone out with bugs, get over yourself and get off apple dick

Get off Verizon's dick. The Thunderbolt is just Evo with LTE, there's nothing special about it, except for its awful battery life and minimal upgrades to a phone that came out last year.

The Thunderbolt is just an EVO with LTE anyway. They didn't even bother upgrading the screen, there's just a few unnoticeable enhancements here and there, nothing special besides the LTE. Droid Bionic on the other hand is actually pretty decent.

Can you remind me who makes the thunderbolt?? HTC. Pairing up two companies for a release date is not as easy as one. Your comment as no relevance to anything as this post has nothing to do with Verizon Wireless or the Thunderbult.

That jobs guy called it the "Year of the copy cats." More like the year of the COPYCAT - singular. Dual core, two cameras - all are already out the ipda copied it not others copied them. Also to call this the FIRST to ship with dual core? So, it is shipping on March 11th but for the next nine days I can order as many XOOMS as I want - ALL HAVE DUAL CORE BY THE WAY. He needs to just die.

What? Are you calling the ipad the copycat? Are you that dumb? And when did all these tablets come out again? Yes, right after the first ipad. Dual core processors and the camera are expected upgrades on the ipad. That's the only way it's heading. Why do you want him to die? Oh yeah, because you are so mad that the ipad will outsell your xoom, hahahaha

530gemini, give it up, you already made a mistake from you very first comment. Apple is not the very first company to create a tablet. iPad may be good, but it is only great to people like you who are blindsided. Steve is great is marketing but to me iPad is not worth the hype.

Sadly, 530gemini's thumbs up to thumbs down ratio will be seeing an imminent decrease for the following reasons:

1. Apparent disregard and dismissal of other peoples opions by the use of slanderish and unwarranted insults

2. I'm bored as hell at work and after reading the insults they have so carelessly tossed around, it has become my personal mission of sorts to read the comments of all post and give them disappointing thumbs down. At least until its time to go home. At which point I may or may not knock my wife's iPhone 3GS off of the counter on to the hard tile surface just for sport. Could be crazy fun!!

Read my lips. This is not the first to ship with dual core. The Motorola Xoom is the first to ship with dual core. It's out last week. When Mr. Jobs speaks, the whole fanboy/girl club Apple Crew listen because that's all they believe and know is Apple. The Xoom runs circles already around the Ipad2, which is why an Ipad3 is probably already in the works which will probably be LTE capable and have some sort of flash capability.

He was claiming it's the first tablet to ship "in volume" with a dual core processor, whatever that means. I guess it doesn't matter if Moto shipped 500,000 Xooms last week - if Apple can ship 5,000,000 next week, they claim to be first.

At least in Jobs' universe.

Sorry to say, but in wi-fi with consistent signal, the xoom is gonna do relatively well on battery. As for 3G, they are both probably gonna suck. Lets be honest. As for the xoom lagging, not sure about that one. Motorola isn't one to just slap some hardware together, pour in some software, and then sell it as the greatest thing since iPhone 2G.

Wow, I really can't believe Apple is pumping out another iPad with no Flash support... Like really, you have a dualcore processor but you can't run flash sites? Apple fail.... When I drop a good chunk of change on a tablet I expect it to be able to view 100% of the web, not html only sites. Sorry Apple but get with the times and let Adobe hook you up with Flash.

Its not that the ipad cant run flash sites, its that why would apple create a mobile, portable device and then drain its battery life, using flash? If it really bothers you dont bother with apple products.. Simple really... go buy some shitty android tablet, go to your pointless Flash based websites, and six months down the line watch it fall to pieces.

Actually, flash wouldn't drain anymore battery life on safari than html does. The reason apple products don't allow flash is that apple won't give adobe the access needed to hardware accelerators and API's. Why is that? Because then sites like Hulu.com could stream your content of choice(freely might I add) and apple would no longer profit from the poor souls forced to purchase everything from the app store.

Put flash and html together and it will even drain battery faster :) And please, flash has been notoriously known to drain the life out of a phone's battery. As for hulu, they're not free. Netflix is much cheaper. But you know what? If you love flash so much, there are tons of other devices out their that support it. No one is forcing you or anyone to get the ipad. So don't force flash on us :)

Hulu via the web-site and not an app purchased through the app store IS free. So thank you for making my point. An app purchased through the app store(30% to Apple) is the only way an otherwise free sight like Hulu will work on an iPhone. And no one is trying to force flash on to anybody. We're merely observing and then commenting on what is clearly the feeling of superiority the iPhone has convinced people to adopt. By the way, of the four major browsers tested, html consumed twice the cpu that flash did. Sorry to burst your html bubble.

Oh please, the ipad has the longest battery life among tablets. So if it is true that html eats up more battery life, then the ipad should have the worst battery life. But that is not the case. Oh yes, you are pushing flash on everyone's throat like you cannot browse the web without it. You are disregarding the ipad simply because it does not support flash, so please stop it already. If flash is that important, then that would mean that the ipad2 will not sell as well as the xoom. How much will you bet that xoom will sell more than the ipad2?

Why would anyone pay this kind of money when there are sooooo many more tablets with more features? Just so you can say you bought an "apple" product? Because there are NO other reasons to pick this over the other options.
