BBM Voice

A free upgrade to BBM 7 (currently in beta) will allow BlackBerry Messenger users to use a new feature that RIM is calling BBM Voice. With BBM Voice, users can make voice calls to another BBM contact for free. The caveat? Both parties must be using a Wi-Fi connection. Users can switch from a text conversation to a voice call and even use a split screen to text while talking, and an indicator shows which of your BBM contacts is available for a call.

Getting ready for BlackBerry users to switch to BlackBerry 10 on January 30th, the BBM 7 update also integrates with BlackBerry ID which backs up your profile, contacts and groups for an easy installation on a new 'Berry handset including BB10. While on a BBM Voice call, users can use the speakerphone, check email, run apps and respond to other BBM texts.

The BBM 7 update with BBM Voice is in beta and is available for BlackBerry devices running BB 6 OS or higher with eventually support for BB 5 OS. The beta is a free download from the BlackBerry Beta Zone. While this might not stop the mass exodus that has befallen BlackBerry, it is a little peak of how customer friendly BlackBerry 10 might be.

I'm a nokia user, and mostly use it for my outdoor activities. And would probably need a blackberry for my work/school. Haven't bought one 'coz I was really waiting and expecting that BB10 would be really a big step forward. If BB really wanted to get back on top of the corporate world, why would they incorporate a feature that was so yesterday. When all the other companies are offering videocall on wifi. Maybe, it's just me to expect too much. Just disappointed... :(

Here we have a carrier problem. Using WiFI for talks damages carriers. The same problem is with Windows Phone 8 with SKYPE. The only difference is that SKYPE can call landlines if you buy credits.

one question off topic.
does BB10 device have front facing camera?

Yes, all of them will have one.

this just reminded me, the playbook did have a front facing camera right, but you can never use it to make other video call aside to someone with another playbook. Hope they dont repeat that, and just allow skype or fring as well
