Is the just-unveiled iPhone Duo, Apple's first-ever foldable, a handset without a predefined user base? Probably.
Who gets what?
Usually, there's a clear line between various Apple devices. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, for example, is for those who are after the best battery life and the largest (non-folding) display out there; those who want to keep it more compact but still want to enjoy a top-level performance should go for the iPhone 18 Pro.
Those who want the basic iPhone flagship experience should wait for 2027, when the vanilla iPhone 18 is expected. Users who value form over everything else are already saving for the ultra-thin and sleek iPhone Air 2 (also expected in 2027). If you're on a budget, you go for the iPhone 18e or an older iPhone device—something like the iPhone 15 Pro, for example.
If you're the type who edits a lot of 4K videos and enjoys Netflix, the iPad Pro is there for you. And so on.
But what about the iPhone Duo?
The $1,999 question

Launched at $1,999 for its baseline variant (and going up to $3,199 for the 2 TB variant), the iPhone Duo got the attention of numerous tech analysts, who talked to Reuters.
Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies noted that Apple appeared to deliberately avoid giving the device a clear target audience.

The company's strong brand is expected to drive healthy early sales, but analysts warn that the combination of a high price and unclear positioning could leave the iPhone Duo largely in the hands of wealthy early adopters. Analysts expect the foldable market to represent less than 3% of global smartphone sales in 2026, with little growth expected in 2027 despite Apple's arrival.
Counterpoint Research's Neil Shah also pointed to the lack of a clear use case, saying it was difficult to tell whether Apple was positioning the foldable primarily as a work device or something designed for entertainment. At the same time, he argued that the iPhone's established identity as a versatile all-purpose device could ultimately give Apple a way to appeal to a broader audience.
My take
I think the iPhone Duo is actually aimed at two groups, even if Apple isn't saying it out loud.
First, there are people with enough money to buy Apple's latest and greatest simply because owning it is a status symbol. The second group is made up of tech pioneers, the brave at heart who aren't afraid to jump on a first-generation device.
Because let's face it, going foldable doesn't suddenly unlock some otherworldly way of using a phone compared to a regular flagship. Multitasking is better optimized and the larger inner display is great for consuming content, but neither experience is exactly new or revolutionary.
What really sets the iPhone Duo apart is the novelty factor, and for some buyers, being among the first to own something new will be the whole point. Ultimately, that's probably the clearest audience Apple needs to target: people who want the status of having the newest iPhone and people who simply want to be among the first to see where this new gadget takes Apple.
