Andrew Yang, a 2020 presidential candidate, and his Noble Mobile company have just acquired SmartLess Mobile, a T-Mobile MVNO.

SmartLess Mobile launched last year as a collaboration by actors Jason Bateman (from the hit series "Ozark"), Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. It's not disclosed what's the acquisition sum for SmartLess Mobile, but recently, Noble Mobile acquired Helium Mobile, too.

Tens of thousands of users

Per the reports, Noble and Smartless combined will have more than 50,000 subscribers after the merge is completed.

Yang is pretty happy about the deal and calls it "a win across multiple dimensions" and highlights that both companies share the same "cultural values and alignment". Which is absolutely right—both Noble and SmartLess think that people don't need to overpay for phone data they don't use. Noble, for example, actually gives you money back for the data you haven't used.

Per Yang's accounts, the average US phone subscriber is spending $80 (or more!) and he wanted to end that, that's why he founded the Noble Mobile MVNO (which runs on T-Mobile's network).

What's more, this way, people can effectively cut down their screen time (which, for some users, is desperately needed) and enjoy life in the real world.

Get money for not using your phone

As we told you recently, Noble Mobile is taking a different approach to the crowded MVNO market. Rather than making customers choose between a dozen plans with different data allowances and perks (I'm looking at you, T-Mix plans!), Noble keeps things simple.

For $50 per month, subscribers get unlimited talk, text, and data on T-Mobile's 5G network. The interesting part, however, is what happens when you don't use all that data: Noble gives you money back in the form of account credit.

In other words, you're not necessarily paying for data you never touch. If you spend one month streaming videos, browsing and using mobile data all day, you still have unlimited data available. If your next month is quieter and you barely use your connection, Noble rewards you for that, with the amount you get back depending on your usage.

Once the money lands in your account, you have three options:

  • Put it towards your next phone bill.
  • Request a transfer and receive cash.
  • Keep it in your Noble account and earn 5.5% annual interest.

For example, if you earned the full $20 every month for a year, you'd collect $240 in credits before interest.

The $50 monthly plan includes unlimited talk, text, and data on T-Mobile's 5G network, along with mobile hotspot access. Subscribers also get international calling to more than 80 countries, plus roaming in Canada and Mexico at no additional cost. For travel to more than 180 other countries, Noble offers its Global service for $5 per day.
