I love the freedom to choose, but T-Mobile's T-Mix Plans feel like a complicated mess

T-Mobile really needs to understand what a good phone plan looks like.

After weeks of rumors and leaks, T-Mobile has finally unveiled its new plan called T-Mix. It basically gives customers the choice to choose the benefit they want, instead of using the built-in benefits. While the concept sounds really great, I believe it is going to cause a state of confusion for users.

What's the new T-Mix plan all about?

Before I get into the main story, it's important to understand exactly what T-Mix is and how it is different from other available options. The T-Mix lineup features three plans: Standard, More, and Loaded, and each is built around the new "Pick" concept, which you can use to select different perks like streaming, food delivery, gaming, wireless benefits, device promotions, music, and sports.

The Standard tier costs $55 per month for one line and gives you benefits like 50 GB premium data, video streaming at 480p, unlimited 3G hotspot, and more. The carrier provides one pick per line for a maximum of four available lines.

If you opt for the T-Mix More plan, you will have to pay $75 per month for a single line, and in return you will enjoy benefits like unlimited premium data, video streaming in 4K Ultra HD quality, up to 60 GB of high-speed data per month, and up to 5 GB of high-speed international data per month. The pick system of this plan is interesting, as the first three lines give you two picks each. However, the fourth line only gets one pick.

The T-Mix Loaded plan is available at $95 per month for a single line and offers the same premium data and video streaming benefits as the More tier. You get up to 250 GB of high-speed hotspot data and up to 15 GB of high-speed international data. You'll receive three picks each for the three lines, but the fourth line only comes with two picks.

All that said, there are a few important points that you should be aware of. First, you can use picks for capabilities like T-Satellite, Optimized Video Calls, and device promotion. You also have the choice to change your selection four times in one year. Wireless benefits like T-Satellite can be changed anytime, though.

It's perplexing

I really like the idea of T-Mix, as it gives the freedom to choose the perk you want. However, at the same time, I also think it's really complicated. It's not only me, many users on online community platforms like Reddit also believe the same.

One user commented that their favorite part about the new T-Mix plan is how confusing this is, especially compared to the Verizon Simplicity plan, which is apparently very simple for customers to understand. Verizon does offer something similar with Verizon myPlan. However, it is worth noting that the carrier requires you to pay extra for individual benefits.

Another user mentioned that these are the most stupid plans they have seen in their life. A Redditor by the name of weeblewobble23 even goes on to comment that the carrier has made the plans so confusing in order to reap more money.

Choose between streaming services and device promotion

Another major issue I think there is with the T-Mix plan is that you have to choose between getting a subsidized phone and streaming services. You won't have enough perks to opt for both.

Previous T-Mobile plans not only got you the streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV, but you also had the option to get a new device. Surely, it all depends on the plan you are subscribed to. But now, you either get streaming services or a new phone, and the carrier is apparently the one that's saving good money here, as it won't have to give you streaming services if you go for a new device and vice versa.

Switching to different streaming services each month wouldn't also be an ideal solution here, because, as mentioned above, you can change your selection only four times a year. That means if you decide to make a switch before 3 months, then you will have to pay a fee.

The confusion continues

Ironically, T-Mobile was the same carrier that recently made changes to simplify its wireless benefits. For reference, in June this year it retired thousands of legacy plans and forcefully migrated affected customers to the new 5G plans like Essential, Experience Beyond, and more. One of the major reasons behind this move was to reduce operational complexity.

However, I believe that the new T-Mix plan introduces another layer of complexity, despite the whole idea behind it being to give more flexibility and choice to users. I would really appreciate you guys sharing your thoughts about the new T-Mix plan in the comments.
