T-Mobile really doesn't want to lose customers. | Image by The Wall Street Journal
T-Mobileis cutting corners as it grapples with the reality of a maturing market. To entice customers, it's rolling out gas discounts, picnic blankets, and delivery fee waivers, but customers want more. While not every subscriber will get relief on their monthly bills, some might if they play their cards right.
The fabled insider discount
T-Mobile customers have a rare opportunity to score an Insider code. | Image by Reddit user SettleAsRobin
T-Mobile offers a coveted Insider discount to lucky customers, shaving 20% off the price of a voice plan for the life of the account. It even applies to any lines that customers add in the future and generally stacks with other promotions.
This discount isn't easy to score. Employees only get a limited number of special codes, which they usually reserve to lure new customers away from rivals.
According to a verified T-Mobile employee, the company has tweaked the policy.
The retention tactic
T-Mobile has reportedly been using Insider codes as a retention tool since the beginning of the year. The only catch is that you will likely be switched to one of its upper-tier plans, like Experience Beyond or Go5G Next. Apparently, you might be able to downgrade to Next from Beyond later without losing your discount.

To secure the deal, just contact customer care and mention that you are ready to jump ship unless you get the Insider code that you know they are handing out. If the rep you talk to is unaware of the policy, ask to speak to another agent or a supervisor.
Why is T-Mobile distributing Insider codes?
It actually works
Some customers have already locked in the discount by following these steps. Apparently, reps are quite willing to hook people up if it keeps them from defecting to another carrier. However, as more people learn about the promo, getting the discount will likely become more difficult.
Yeah I talked to the rep and I got go5g next 20 percent off my lines.

I can’t believe it! It worked!! Thank you. I’m on the next5g plan and I just got it added

Is it worth it?
If you are grandfathered into a very old plan with rock-bottom rates, a 20% discount won't offset the higher base price of a new plan. Even if you are on a recent plan, the switch might mean losing tax-inclusive pricing and lifetime price-lock guarantees.
However, if you are already on a modern plan, this is a golden opportunity to lock down massive savings.
The generosity with which the company is giving away Insider codes raises the question of whether it's having a bad quarter.
20% off and in a few months another $5 increase to make up the discount. No thanks.
My Simple Choice plan from 2014 never had a price increase. That's worth more to me in principle than whatever unnecessarily bloated plan they are dangling as an incentive to switch.
