Everybody knows that the iPhone 17 (standard) is the most popular mobile device in the world, but even though the iPhone 17 Pro Max and 17 Pro were ranked immediately behind their more affordable brother in the Q2 2026 sales chart, you'll be surprised to find out today that this was actually not the best-selling smartphone family of this year's April-June timeframe.
If Apple doesn't top this hierarchy, you probably won't be shocked to see Samsung add a somewhat unusual title to its already vast portfolio of mobile industry awards and crowns obtained over the last few years. But surprisingly or not, it's not the Galaxy S26 trio that managed to eclipse the iPhone 17 lineup.
All hail the mid-range kings!
Despite a significant and constant expansion of the so-called "premium" smartphone market segment in the past couple of years (and especially the last couple of quarters), the world's top-selling Q2 2026 handset family was composed entirely of budget-friendly Android mid-rangers.

We're talking about the Galaxy A Series, which Smart Analytics Global (SAG) describes as the "clear standout in the mass market." The industry-leading product portfolio impressively improved its sales numbers by 11 percent compared to Q2 2025 to finish this year's second calendar quarter with a dominant 18 percent share.
The most popular member of Samsung's mid-range family was (unfortunately for the company's profit margins) not the Galaxy A57 5G, Galaxy A37 5G, or at least last year's Galaxy A56 5G, but rather the entry-level Galaxy A17 5G, followed by the even humbler Galaxy A16 4G. Guess what, it appears many millions of buyers around the world don't really mind the notch.
The iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 families did impress with their progress
As disappointing as it might sound for Apple to lose the top spot in this report, the iPhone 17 quartet actually boosted the Q2 2025 sales figures of the iPhone 16 roster by a massive 24 percent and the iPhone 16 family posted a similarly remarkable 22 percent improvement over the iPhone 15 lineup.

Taken together, the two most recent iPhone families would surpass the Galaxy A Series, although that's obviously not a fair comparison when Samsung's Galaxy S Series also exists.
Even viewed separately, though, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 families generated "exceptionally strong" demand in Q2 2026 despite being released a lot earlier than the Galaxy S26 lineup, with the 17 Pro Max shining particularly bright in the US and China while the inexpensive and newer iPhone 17e got off to an excellent start at the Japanese box-office.
The Galaxy S26 trio lost quite a bit of steam
After a March 2026 debut that was universally labeled a success by both Samsung and independent market research firms like SAG, the S26, S26 Plus, and S26 Ultra apparently experienced great trouble sustaining their momentum between April and June, ultimately ending the quarter with 4 percent of the world's total sales... with all other Galaxy S-series devices also included in that tally.

There's really no way to view that result in a positive light, especially when you consider the high-end Android family's 18 percent drop from Q2 2025. For what it's worth, other premium Androids also suffered in Q2 2026, although that's unlikely to give Samsung a lot of solace or encouragement for next year's Galaxy S27 roster.

Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, Poco, and Motorola. What do all these names have in common? Big Q2 2026 sales declines for their most popular smartphone families, from the Redmi Series to the Oppo A, Honor X, and Moto G.

That's definitely no surprise given the price hikes that impacted the low-end and mid-end sectors so dramatically this year, but there was actually one other company besides Apple and Samsung that managed to increase the sales of not one but two major product portfolios.
I'm talking about Huawei and the rapidly expanding (across Europe, at least) Nova Series, which reportedly jumped 19 percent compared to Q2 2025, as well as the China-exclusive Changxiang Series, which somehow gained 94 percent (!!!) between last year's second quarter and the same timeframe of 2026.
