Some Apple fans have already canceled their iPhone Duo pre-orders following the "Crackgate" fiasco, and now it seems like more might be about to do the same. Though perhaps not as prevalent as the inner display cracking problem, a new issue seems to have arisen for the iPhone Duo.

At first, it seemed like it might be an isolated incident. But just like Crackgate, more reports of the same problem eventually started coming in. This, for some Apple users, might be the last straw which might get them to cancel their iPhone Duo pre-orders out of fear of receiving one of the all-too-common bad units.

Is this Gapgate?

Humorously being called Gapgate, a name that might just stick, some iPhone Duo units seem to be improperly assembled. These units develop gaps around their sides or, sometimes, around the hinge. Gaps that are large enough that you can even see the insides of the phone.

This, obviously, is a problem. Such gaps can affect the phone’s IP68 rating and also likely lead to unintended stress on the chassis and internal components. Given that it’s not that uncommon for a part inside the hinge to dislodge and crack the inner display, such stress on the phone is just waiting to cost you $2,000 or more.

Some Gapgate cases seem milder than others, with the gap not being nearly as spacious. However, even here, it can be seen that the phone is most definitely a little wonky and might run into trouble later down the line as the chassis keeps moving incorrectly.

In addition, there appears to be another design oversight with the iPhone Duo. The spine of the phone has a gap that would easily allow dust, sand, and debris to get into the body of the phone.

Samsung addresses this possibility on its own foldable phones by capping off these ends with an extra piece of protection. Apple either overlooked this engineering solution or didn’t deem it important enough to bother implementing.

Apple fans are now scared to buy an iPhone Duo

These problems that have showed up on the iPhone Duo are having a tangible impact on the phone’s popularity. Apple is advising staff at stores to just repair or replace a broken iPhone Duo, provided that it hasn’t been deliberately destroyed.

Some users canceled their iPhone Duo pre-orders back when Crackgate started making the news. Others are now considering canceling their pre-order because they’re afraid that the iPhone Duo unit that they get shipped will have one or more of these oft-reported issues.

Meanwhile, every time an instance of Gapgate shows up, some users check their own iPhone Duo and find that they have some similar problem as well. This is very much like when Crackgate first became popular and others started seeing the bump indicative of an incoming broken display in the display crease on their iPhone Duos.

For some Apple fans, on the other hand, canceling their iPhone Duo pre-order is a last resort option that they’re trying not to come to. Due to how far shipping dates slipped after scalpers cleared Apple out of inventory during the pre-order window, these users still have some time left to decide whether they should cancel their order or not.

Stay away from first-generation products

I said this before the launch of the iPhone Duo, I said it during the pre-order days, I said it after physical release, and I’m going to say it now once more, stay away from first-generation products. Especially if they cost over two grand.

If I were an Apple user who had pre-ordered an iPhone Duo and not had it ship yet, I would be racing to cancel it before it did. After seeing Crackgate, a few instances of Gapgate, and other odd issues like misaligned halves or the abysmal app support, why wouldn’t I?
