Samsung Galaxy S6 scores a solid victory against the iPhone 6 in our blind camera comparison

Samsung Galaxy S6 scores a solid victory against the iPhone 6 in our blind camera comparison

Boy, that Samsung Galaxy S6 has one great camera, doesn't it? The shooter may not be absolutely perfect, as you surely know if you've read our review of the Galaxy S6 camera, but it is definitely potent enough to beat the iPhone 6 in a camera comparison. And our readers seem to agree. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the winner in our blind camera comparison, and it beat the iPhone 6 by a mile. Samsung's flagship topped six out of six scenes, collecting about 9 times more reader votes than the iPhone.

Surprised by the results? We aren't. the Samsung Galaxy S6 has proven to be an excellent shooter time and time again, especially in low light scenes. What's really surprising, however, is the margin by which it won this blind camera comparison. As a whole, the iPhone 6 has a very solid 8MP camera producing pleasing images with vivid colors. Still, our readers seem to prefer the sharper photos delivered by the Galaxy S6's 16MP camera.

That's all for today, folks, but it won't be long until we bring you a more thorough camera comparison. We'll be back with more photo samples, accompanied by our own analysis in search of what makes the Galaxy S6's photos better than the iPhone's, and where it might be leaving room for improvement. Until then, here's another look at the images used in the blind comparison, as well as the numbers of votes from our readers.

Final results:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S6 – 27063 votes
  2. iPhone 6 – 3033 votes

S6 is great in almost every accept, but why do we have to alaways agree on compromises? Why can't no OEM make pocketable, waterproof phone, with great camera, internals, SD slots, wieh great screen, battery etc. Why there must be always something stupid? Lack of SD kills S6 for me, I won't spend 800$ for 128GB when I can buy SD for 50$.

Every device has compromises, the S6 for example, had to give up many of those for design and ergonomics.
Regarding the storage, upgrading is very expensive on the S6, but UFS 2.0 isn't cheap, especially compared to the type of flash memory used in microsd cards.

I agree about expensive upgradings but I think the should have make a version
with removable mSD and any one who want the top mem speed could
remove it. They made a dual sim one after all. It's called versatility.

For some photos I like more the iphone approach e.g. scene 3. Too much
contrast and very hard colours from the S6. (Still prefaire note4's camera)
It would be better if the were reference photos from a good dslr (not a junk one).

I know that both cameras had problems distinguishing between some red hues.
S6 mostly. Remember this? >

Can anyone tell me what happened with that, did Samsung fix it?

Say what You want, but UFS is not necessary, there should be 16/32GB of it for system so it could run well and for music, movies, pictures normal flash memory, nobody will notice if picture load up 0.2 seconds faster than usually. Like on PC, no one will buy 1 TB SSD for storing documents or files, SSD makes sense when OS boots from it.
And sacrificing SD slot has nothing to do with ergonomics, they could easily implement it, phone should be little thicker so camera wouldn't prount and battery would be much better. Look at Sony, they have it all, SD, waterproofing in not bulky chassis (Z3C), hell, S5 was almost perfect phone.

It wouldn't hurt having faster and faster storage wouldn't it? It will get cheaper as time passes.
I know that they can add an SD slot, but they intentionally didn't, I agree that people should have choice. I guess they're very afraid of inconsistent performance.
The bigger battery and thicker phone part, I fully agree with that, I don't get it why people want thinner with smaller battery.

Actually nobody wants thinner phones, I've never met anyone who would rather have thinner phone than bigger battery. It just looks good in ads, but no OEM mentions battery in same ad.

" I guess they're very afraid of inconsistent performance."

Do You really believe that? SMH, and that's why pricing is so ridicolous. They just want to rip off customers who are stupid enough to believe that every decision Sammy makes is about making people happy. Same applies to Apple and many others,

The "inconsistent performance" statement actually holds. You have no idea how many people I know who got a phone with expandable storage and blame phone for when things like apps that are installed in sdcard either are slow or corrupt. Of course the blame cannot really be on the phone but the cheap "$4" 32 gb sd card they got from some chinese cellphone accessory retailer. By having the storage completely internal they eliminate the chance of normal people ruining the experience and blaming the manufacturer, of course this comes with the side effect of technologically versed people being upset (like myself) who own High quality sd cards. I for one have a 64 gb UHS Sandisk micro sd, but I got the S6 Edge anyways and so far am loving the phone.

I agree with you. We don't need a 5 mm thin phone. I would very much prefer the S6 to be around 8 mm but with bigger battery.

It looks like many decisions that should be made by technical teams are made by marketing people these days (thinner, lighter, etc.).

I have an S6 Edge. Samsung has S6 models with dual SIM cards. They certainly could have put a micro SD card slot in the device.

But many keep saying they interfere with the speed of the UFS storage. I lpersnally haven't seen an as card slow down my past phones that I could tell.

The way I see it. I spend 32 bucks per m OK month to pay for it. 32bucks is cheaper than $50.

I still use an as card with my S6. I just attach it in the car which is all it need it for anyways.

It would not interfere, the problem is the performance wont be consistent, for example some of your files and apps are on internal, and some are on the sd, obviously accessing the ones on sd will be slower.

Yeah, I owned Z3 Compact for about 3months, incredible phone, but camera and washed out screen dissapointed me. I hope that with Z5 Sony will fix their awful camera algorithms, because the rest, casing, battery are simply amazing, probably my favourite Android phone along with M7 and Optimus G.

Oh well, I wouldn't say Z3 Compact has a washed out screen. Unless you were using AMOLED screen before? ;)
As for camera - I own Z2 and most of my photos are taken with manual mode. I find SuperiorAuto not to be so superior, it tends to wash out colours, over expose, and during the night completely kills the proper white balance.
But the manual mode is really great!

I think that Sony went a bit too much ahead of the competition - Z2 killed everything year ago and even today I see no reason how M9/S6/G4 are better than Z2? Processing package doesn't matter to me, the difference is noticeable only when you are gaming. None of the newest flagship is waterproof, only one brings superior stereo speaker - at a cost of huge bezels - and the camera with f2.0 is still a capable performer. I'd love to compare photos from S6 and manual mode Z2/Z3.

I take ufs 2.0 over an sd card reader in the phone any day, it keeps the phone running. Like new and supper fast even now after 2 months of use, my note 4 went lager and cramp after 1 month and is now very slow, my s6 edge is faster than it was when I 1st got it as they have removed small bug with Samsung service updates like the flipbord flick back on the home page ( I have had no filmware updates)

I wish it had removable battery cause of bad battery life, but would never use an SD slot even when low on storage bc using it slows down the phone. That's why iPhones and nexus phones, which focus on performance, don't offer it.
Agree with the rest of your comment though.

All the S6 photos seem to have so much more light (except Scene 3)
Maybe its time Apple improve the lens too
Both the iPhone 5S and 6 have aperture of f/2.2
The S6's aperture is f/1.9 and the G3 is f/1.8

12MP vs 16MP. That's catching up? Catching up would be having a 16MP too. At this rate, Samsung will be releasing the S7 next year with 20MP and Apple will still be at 12MP.
Samsung and Apple both typically use the same Sony sensor. Samsung however, does a better job with them. As the S4, S5 and Note 3 all shared the same sensor, as did the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5S and 6 and 6S does.

6 years, same sensor, yet the iPhone increased in cost? FOR WHAT? Parts get cheaper as they get older in most cases.

Samsung 16MP could easily beat OPPO Find 7 20 MP camera or Sony Xperia Z2 20.7 Megapixel camera... So its really obvious Megapixals arent everything.. but its clear they matter but its just isnt everything.

Apple with its 8MP can easily manages to compete with the likes of Sony and HTC... and like Samsung 16MP camera, Apple doesn't have to bump up to 16MP camera to compete or even outperform Samsung 16MP camera.

The increase in cost of the Iphone was due to Performance and Brand like every other Company out there including Samsung, Hardware itself like more ram or larger camera has very little effect on the final cost of a phone as many of them only cost between $50-$200 to make.

If spec increases are now innovation. Then, Motorola and LG innovated the dual-core processor in 2010 that Apple uses today. Samsung and LG innovated the 8 mp camera in 2008 that Apple still uses. It looks like Apple fans don't care about specs, unless they find one in which Apple at one time was ahead---that spec is then innovation.

No surprise.

Apple, while I do freely admit despite my hatred for the company and dislike of iOS, does do a very good job with their camera software. I've seen many amazing pictures taken with their "mere" 8mp camera.

But Samsung also does a great job with their camera software. The meager 5mp camera on my crappy Galaxy Light takes better pictures than my 8mp Nexus 4. I'd say they even rival that of my OnePlus One, when cropped/reduced for sharing.

But when software is equal or near enough to it, it all comes down to hardware. 16 is more than 8. OIS trumps no OIS.

I'm not surprised Apple has stuck with only 8mp for so long. It's all part of their practice of sitting on technology to bilk their customers for more money each time they release something new. They withhold long-available tech because they know they can get paid at least twice by waiting to update. Maybe the iPhone 6s will have OIS, but it'll still have the 8mp camera. Maybe they'll bump the 6s+ to 12mp, but the regular iPhone won't see that camera until the 7 (maybe).

It's a shame that they behave in this greedy manner, because with their software and the technology that's available, Apple could produce an iPhone that would trounce all but the hybrids like the Nokia 808/1020 or the Galaxy Zooms and similar. But they won't, because they can't stop being greedy.

Samsung as been able to make better cams for there phones for a long time just like CPU's than Apple but the problem was linked to the os they was having to use, this is the 1st year where they have been able to add 64bit CPUs in ther phones, but they had them for years but been unable to use them, also same problem with the cam it was limited by the api in the OS stopping them from getting the best images, now not the case due to Amos api 2.0
