Bluetooth 3.0 is good to go
We have already told you about all the intriguing details on the latest version of the Bluetooth technology. However, it has now been officially announced on the Bluetooth SIG website as the Bluetooth 3.0 High Speed (HS). It is clear that the developers have focused their attention on achieving higher speeds of data transfer. The key feature of the 3.0 version is the 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL), which basically enables Bluetooth to transfer over Wi-Fi. For the purpose, however, both devices that will take part in the transfer will have to be Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi enabled. If not, the process will revert to the slower Bluetooth speed. Another new feature here would be the improved power saving, thanks to the new Enhanced Power Control.

Hmmm...anyone know if this is just a software upgrade or do I need to get a phone with new hardware? I am wondering if I'll be able to take advantage of this with my iPhone 3G.

Pretty sure the chip is different. I read an article refering to the new chip in the next iPhone having 802.11 wifi and no one knew why. This must be why. The article was some spec sheet leek from gizmodo.
