Android to be on more devices than Windows in 2016
Right now, Android definitely has a huge momentum compared to Windows, but Microsoft still has a huge advantage in terms of overall number of devices using its platform. By the end of this year, there will be nearly 1.5 billion Windows-based devices and 608 million Android-based ones.
However Microsoft has been around for decades, while Android only launched in 2008. Since then it has skyrocketed to become the world’s biggest mobile platform with no close runner up in sight. In tablets, it ranks second after the iPad and Apple’s iOS.
The whole model of distribution of Android is different than Windows and iOS. While the two platforms cost money to users, Android instead is available for free with revenue coming from the further establishment of Google search along with other services.
And as a whole, traditional computer sales have slumped 8% in the last quarter, the sharpest drop since 2001.

Symbian still beats Android in terms of raw capabilities.... Android is good, and can be called the most popular open-source mobile OS, or perhaps the most modified, but I'd hesitate to call it the most advanced. Heck, I think even MeeGo and Maemo have more raw capabilities, just not realized due to low adoption rates

Tell me some raw capabilities of dead Symbian where it can beat Android.

lol...you wanna know why? symbian can run more apps than android without being laggy and draining the battery fast....
symbian dont need the latest and the greatest hardware to perform its task...
it take android to its 10th version to be smooth (but still has flaws) to be compared to the smoothness of the likes of iOS/WP...even PA writers said that... while symbian, smooth and fluid.. the only problem with symbian is that it lack support... its browser is still behind, but can match iOS safari surprisingly...its app catalog is lacking coz of, again, support....
and not to mention... android was created by symbian's own engineer coz nokia dont support symbian foundation..they didnt listen to the foundation coz they have answers and the foundation collapse and the engineers need a job and google pick them up and work with android!
the reason why symbian is called outdated is because of lack of support from nokia! if nokia just invest more with symbian and meego this will never happen..they already saw that symbian is falling..but actually all they need to do is to make it very modern... and the result is nokia belle...but they already give up! if they could just listen to symbian foundation, this will never happen.. instead of going UIQ, they go s60...they miscalculated it.. like RIM did- they think iPhone is a toy, but what happen..you know what happen..but im proud and happy that RIM will pursue their own OS and the product is BlackBerry 10!!! a very capable and advance OS of BlackBerry base on QNX...
how about nokia? jump to someone's boat... but if they will pursue and invest to make symbian looks and feels modern and meego before (talking back 2010, which the declining starts) this will never happen....

- symbian can run more apps
I don't know about that. Thanx (But still I am going to test this.)
-without being laggy
Well, In my case symbian is laggy.I don't know which phone u use. (Old Nokia 5800 Xpress music)
-symbian dont need the latest and the greatest hardware to perform its task...
I don't understand this part.
Are you saying that Window 98 is better than Window 7 because it take less advance hardware.
Window 7 is more advance than Window 98 that is why it need better hardware. Same goes with Android. LOL

lol...ubuntu is open source...
isnt it funny that android a newbie and not a real linux (its a linux base...not even made by linux foundation) is more famous that the likes of ubuntu, debian, and linux mint...
i hope google will realize that they need to merge chrome OS and android now... to make android chrome book...a very good alternative to windows and macs!

Sadly enough too many people don't understand the epic-ness of open source, android is becoming great because many technology monsters are putting effort into it! Let's hope ifans keep buying light saber-style iphones so google & co are forced to improve even more and we all get cookies ;)

Hmmm as per one earlier article it was 2014 ... so what lead to this big change in prediction?
7. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
google need to merge the beauty of chrome and the ecosystem of android now!
so that they could truly outnumber windows... even though i dont like android but if it will have the looks of chrome.. im in! and windows enjoy its monopoly on the PC game so much....
google should realize this... the chrome is one beautiful OS but being an internet OS doesnt really catch everyone's eyes! even though the chromebook is now only $250.... they need to merge android with it!! they should also make an office suite for it! even though they got google docs, they need to work for this like microsoft office!
feell pity for ubuntu and other real linux though!

I am not a big fan of chrome os ... for the same reason as UK govt not favouring iPAD and iCloud for politicians :)
19. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
same here..not really a big fan of chrome OS but it looks really good... i dislike it coz its online-base OS..not really pleasing for people want a real OS...an OS that will work just the way they want, with no internet, and on-the-go
22. rusticguy (Posts: 2826; Member since: 11 Aug 2012)
I had tried eyeos quite sometime back on our own server. It was in infancy then and free. Now it seems to be commercially licensed. But the idea is same i guess 9and good for corporate enterprise with their own infrastructre):
Surprising so far they haven't caught the atention of "iOS" owners ... else they would have faced the same fate as LINDOWS :)

I agree, I'd like to see Android tablets that can switch to a Chrome UI on command like how Windows 8 swtiches between traditional and metro/modern UI.

Comparing a wannabe mobile o.s. To a full blown desktop os? Dafuq?

Same way how Apple shows their iPad sales have outgrown pc sales
17. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
They are both a computer OS.
And from an average user point of view, android can do everything you ask from a computer.
You can't even imagine what it will look like in 2016, with the current rate of development
24. ogy_dogy (Posts: 453; Member since: 29 Jun 2012)
Yeah you run android on a pc, play some elder scrolls, write something in office (the proper one, not all those droid wannabes) and ill admit i was wrong. Untill then the title might have said bycicle sales overgrown pc sales. Same thing...

Edit a video with sufficient quality to pass a college-level course for video editing/creation?
Use a third-party program on the current software version regardless of device or manufacturer without crashing?
Boot and be connected to the internet in less than 30 seconds?
Install a non-factory disk drive or card reader?
Watch a Blu-Ray?
Store all one's music, photos and videos without storage expansion?
Be honest with yourself. Android is good, but it's not a full computer OS, it's a mobile version of a port of a computer OS, and shows its lacks in that regard. Is it possible it will do what most people use their computers for in the near future? Absolutely, but at the same time, there may not be a strong clamor for Androids when the users can buy a Windows-running (WP, RT, or PC) version of the same product (phone, tablet, computer) that integrates the entire system with factory apps and support (especially at the more-competitive pricing Microsoft has been pushing of late). Would an average user be more likely to buy the 2016 iteration of a Galaxy S3 or an ATIV S? A Galaxy Tab or a Slate 5? A Chromebook, a Slate with the dock, or a Series 5/7/9?

Wannabe mobile os? You mean Windows Phone right?

So captain obvious?
Lets wait 2015-2016 and than we'll see.
I haven't touched JB but after using 2.3.6 and 4.0.1 Android I switched to WP. Android have very big potention (maybe some day I'll switch to it back) but for now it's too "wooden".

Ok now let me pinpoint one of the biggest PAIN on Android as a Techie. They have this Mail client for MS Exchange. Ideally Nokia (though their old mail4exchange), Iphone, Window Mobile all worked out of the box with any server with EAS support (including LINUX equivalents). On Android it just does a OTA Sync of Inbox and nothing else whereas same Mail server iPhone/Window Mobile syscs everything and even Blackberry through astrasync can sync all PIM data.
Not sure why Android's Exchange client is just Inbox oriented. When i contacted the mail server vendor they said it's a client side issue so google or vendor will have to work on that .
Im considering going to WP just because of this. I dont play games or watch movies on phone :)

This is probably the most pathetic effort I've seen to spruik google's flailing share price to date.
Gartner's been smoking the whacky-tabaccee I think.
