Motorola Signature vs Galaxy S26 Ultra: Main differences to expect

The Motorola Signature 27 is coming November 5, and from all the rumors we've heard, this one will be one frontier device that will easily rival all other Android flagships.

It's reportedly coming with a Tandem OLED display that will feature excessive brightness, a Snapdragon Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, a 200 MP periscope camera, B&O audio, and GrapheneOS support. Wow! Sounds like a pretty impressive set of features that surely revitalizes my interest in Motorola's flagship effort.

One device that could probably feel the heat is the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is Samsung's best conventional flagship device. However, it's been rolling on old laurels for a while, with little excitement in the hardware department.

Samsung hasn't introduced any major changes to its Galaxy S Ultra lineup in a while, and it definitely shows—the Galaxy S26 Ultra is easily the hardest Galaxy phone to recommend recently.

Design and Size

Motorola is leveraging nostalgia, while the Galaxy relies on a utilitarian look

The Motorola Signature 27's design has been revealed, and the phone employs key signature design elements from some iconic Motorola phones of old. The most striking design element is the textured back, which is different depending on the color you choose. The Olive color one gets a feathered-inspired finish (whatever that means), while the Cool Smoke version has a tactical weave finish.

Recommended For You
The phone has a sloping camera plateau that spans the whole upper rear of the device.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a bit more sterile in terms of design language and plays things too safe. Nothing outstanding here, just an aluminum-glass phone that completely disappears once you put a case on it. It has the S Pen stylus in the bottom, whereas only some mid-range Motorola phones have a similar accessory.

In terms of size, the Signature will likely end up being a bit more compact than the Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, we don't have the dimensions for the Motorola just yet, so it could still technically go either way.

As mentioned, the Motorola Signature 27 will come in Cool Smoke and Olive colors, while the Galaxy S27 Ultra is available in Cobalt Violet and Sky Blue. White Silver Shadow and Pink Gold are exclusively available online.

Display Differences

The Motorola Signature 27 will arrive with a 6.8-inch Extreme AMOLED Duo, which uses Tandem OLED technology. That's similar to the ones on the iPad Pro and the most recent MacBook Pro, making this Signature 27 one of the select few on the smartphone market to have such a display tech.

The benefits of a Tandem OLED display? Stacking two or more OLED panels achieves significantly higher screen brightness and better efficiency, a combination that is "all gas, no brakes" for the average Android flagship.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra comes with a slightly larger 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. This one achieves 2,420 nits in peak brightness, as per our tests, but this one isn't even the most intriguing feature.

The highlight of the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the Privacy Display feature, which emulates a privacy screen protector and shields sensitive screen content when viewed from the side. On top of that, the Galaxy S26 Ultra has an anti-reflective coating that largely eliminates glare.

Performance and Software

Qualcomm's best is coming to Motorola

The Motorola Signature 27 is coming along with Qualcomm's most powerful new chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which was announced a little over a month ago. Built on a 2 nm node, this one promises excellent performance and efficiency, but thermal throttling could be a problem.

Motorola says there's a 40% larger vapor chamber, though it's not entirely sure what phone Motorola is comparing with.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra, on the other hand, comes with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, a 3 nm one slightly overclocked in comparison with the regular variant of the chipset. It's one of the fastest Android chips right now, and it wouldn't cease to be even though a successor exists, that's for sure.

Both devices will arrive with 12 GB of RAM in their base 256 GB versions. The Signature 27 will come with 512 GB and 1 TB versions, and both will likely feature 16 GB of RAM. The Galaxy S26 Ultra doesn't have a microSD card, and neither does the Signature 27.

Android 17 will run on both phones, with seven years of updates. The difference here is that the Signature 27 will support Graphene OS, a custom Android ROM that focuses on privacy.

Camera

Different approaches

The Motorola Signature 27 will rely on a triple camera, with a 50 MP LYT-910 main camera sensor, a 50 MP ultrawide, and a 200 MP periscope telephoto. There's also a dedicated image sensor that will help capture blur-free images of fast-moving subjects, which sounds quite appealing for all parents out there.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Ultra has a 200 MP main camera, a 50 MP ultrawide and periscope cameras, and a fourth, 10 MP telephoto that is pretty much obsolete and does more bad than good.

I'd expect the Signature 27 to have a little better zoom performance, like most other phones with a 200 MP periscope, which allows for pretty awesome digital zoom.

At the same time, the Galaxy S26 Ultra might have the upper hand when capturing images with the main camera. We'll see, though.

Battery Life and Charging

Probably a triumph for the Motorola

The Signature 27 will come with a 6,000 mAh silicon-carbon battery, a pretty decent amount for a flagship that will be available in the US.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra comes with a 5,000 mAh li-ion battery, the old Samsung special, and likely won't pose a significant challenge to the Motorola Signature 27.

If anything, the more efficient chip of the Signature 27 will likely help its case immensely.

Charging-wise, the Motorola Signature 27 will get fast 90W charging, while the Samsung phone will be limited to 60. Both will get wireless charging: 25 W for the Galaxy and 50 W proprietary for the Motorola.

Summary

Motorola is bringing some pretty exciting upgrades to its late-2026 flagship phone. Faster performance, a great display, and an impressive camera system are the main highlights here, but I'm also excited about the Graphene OS support, which definitely improves its aftermarket support and raises its street cred among enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is one of the best Android phones available right now, but it's also true that it has a very healthy amount of competition.

Add Motorola Signature 27 to the list, but be careful about the Galaxy S27 Ultra that's just around the corner.
