Apple has just announced its touch-enabled MacBook Pro models that, aside from the touchscreen capabilities, also come equipped with OLED displays at last. However, the company is also still offering non-OLED MacBook Pro models that do not have touchscreens, something that is unlikely to last for much longer.

Apple has dubbed its new MacBook Pro displays “PROLED” in its classic marketing fashion. In simpler and more standard terms, these are OLED displays that also support touch.
As the company continues to deviate from certain beliefs held by Steve Jobs, its introduction of MacBook models with touchscreens is just its attempt to catch up with the rest of the industry in this one aspect.
These new models also come with a Dynamic Island instead of the standard notch and, in a twist we didn’t see coming, they also brought back the glowing Apple logo on the rear. However, the new PROLED models will also cost you $400 more than the regular Pro models.

Non-OLED models might get discontinued soon

In his newsletter Power On, Apple insider Mark Gurman says that it’s likely that Apple will discontinue the non-PROLED MacBook Pro models in the future. Currently, users can buy new non-PROLED models with the standard display and notch that Apple’s customer base is familiar with.

However, making two separate lines of MacBook Pro models is a burden on the already strained supply chain. Also, in my personal opinion, having two different types of MacBook Pro models to choose from seems very odd. Especially as some Apple users wish that they could have just gotten an OLED MacBook without having to pay for a touchscreen that they’re never going to use.

Gurman hypothesizes that, in the near future, manufacturing costs will drop for the PROLED MacBook Pro models. Once this comes to pass, Apple will likely discontinue the non-PROLED models to once again streamline its MacBook lineup and reduce strain on the supply chain.
This is probably going to happen. However, all I see is that future MacBook Pro models will likely cost more than non-PROLED models do today. OLED is worth paying extra for but I have also never really been a fan of touchscreen laptops.
