iPhone 18: five reasons Apple's next flagship phone is worth the wait

Should you get the iPhone 18? Here are five reasons which might convince you to wait for Apple's next flagship.

The iPhone 18 won’t just be your standard yearly upgrade: it will mark the second year of major changes to the iPhone lineup by Apple. While the iPhone 17 series is massively popular — propelling Apple to number one phone maker in the world — reports coming in make it apparent that the iPhone 18 will be excellent too.

In fact, there are many rumored reasons that the iPhone 18 might be worth the wait if you’re looking for a new iPhone. Here’s five of the biggest ones that you should know.

Under-display Face ID

Apple popularized the notch, and then it introduced the Dynamic Island. Both features served the purpose of integrating the front camera and the Face ID sensors into the display, while simultaneously letting it extend to the top of the phone. Apple wants to change that now.

The 20th anniversary iPhone Pro — coming out in 2027 — will reportedly feature a display with no cutouts at all. Both the front camera and the Face ID sensors will be housed under the display. In preparation for that model, Apple is apparently moving the Face ID setup below the display next year with the iPhone 18.

If Apple is able to get this done in time, then the iPhone 18 will be the first Apple phone with a punch-hole display. Which might make it worth the wait for those of you who like that design more than Apple’s current offerings.

Variable aperture for the camera

Not pleased with just a new rear camera island with the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple is reportedly introducing a variable aperture for its main camera with the iPhone 18 series. A variable aperture will mean that users can control exactly how much light is let in to hit the sensor. In darker environments, you can opt for a wider aperture for more detailed photography.

According to reports, Samsung is introducing a wider aperture on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, hence the reintroduction of a rear camera island on that phone. However, this will still be a fixed aperture, whereas the iPhone 18, if the reports are accurate, will give you full control.

This is going to be one of the most major upgrades to the iPhone in years, and is well worth the wait if you’re passionate about the photos that you take with your phone.

A more streamlined design

Though the iPhone 17 Pro ditched the heavily-marketed titanium for an aluminum chassis, the rear still needed a glass portion for efficient wireless charging. This glass portion is highly visible on all colors that the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are available in.

According to new incoming reports, the iPhone 18 Pro rear design will be a lot more streamlined. Apple is trying to minimize the color difference between the aluminum chassis and the glass portion. So, if the color contrast on the iPhone 17 Pro bothered you, the iPhone 18 Pro will be well worth waiting for.

New processor technology

With the iPhone 18 series, Apple will be introducing the A20 chips. The A20 Pro will be the chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max (and possibly the foldable iPhone). It will be the first Apple silicon chip to be manufactured using a 2 nm process. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) makes these chips, and the current A19 Pro chips are made using the foundry’s 3 nm manufacturing process.

Samsung has reportedly already finalized its in-house 2 nm Exynos 2600, and will debut that chip early next year for the Galaxy S26 phones. The jump from 3 nm to 2 nm should lead to improved battery life, better performance, and better heat management, all of which might be reasons for some users to wait for the iPhone 18.

A much better software experience

It’s no secret that Apple’s software has been lacking in quality control for the last two years. In fact, there was a time when Apple released bad updates constantly. One of the places where the company has struggled endlessly is Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI features that we were promised all the way back in June of 2024.

Apple has finally decided to partner with Google for Apple Intelligence, and that means that it’s finally going to become a service that can compete with Galaxy and Pixel phones. This update should be done rolling out and getting bug fixes by the time the iPhone 18 series starts coming out, which makes it the phone worth getting if you’re into AI.

The iPhone 17 will be getting the fixes too, of course, though you never know which features Apple might lock to just the iPhone 18 series. After all, it did something similar before when we were told that only the iPhone 15 Pro models had enough RAM for Apple intelligence.
