Google allows some Pixel 11 buyers to keep the phones they traded in if returned due to error
A system error mistakenly failed to acknowledge the receipt of many Pixel 10 units used as a trade toward Pixel 11 purchases.

For many Pixel fans, updating to the latest and greatest Pixel means trading in the model they have been using as their daily driver for some time. Internally, they are hoping that the process goes smoothly even though they know that Google trade-ins are often fraught with danger.
Google introduced the Pixel 11 line on August 12, 2026, and pre-orders started the same day. The line was released on August 20, 2026. As is typical, many Pixel 11 buyers agreed to send in their year-old Pixels to get back in return a credit that they used to reduce the cost of purchasing the latest model.
Some Pixel 11 buyers who traded in a Pixel 10 model are having a problem
That's the plan, anyway, but there have been complaints about Google's performance when it comes to handling trade-ins. On Reddit, several Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL owners who traded in their handset for a Pixel 11 model are having some major issues.
Google has two different trade-in methods
There are two different methods that Google offers for trade-ins. The standard trade-in involves the consumer using his charge card to pay full-price for his new Pixel 11 series model. The phone ships with a return envelope that is used to mail the trade to a third-party company that partners with Google and verifies when the device has been received. When that occurs, Google authorizes a refund to the consumer's credit card for the amount of the trade-in credit.

The second trade-in method gives the consumer an instant credit that reduces the immediate cost of the phone. The phone buyer agrees to send in his trade-in device and gives Google the authorization to charge his card the full price of the new Pixel 11 model if the trade is not received, or the condition of the trade is worse than the customer said it was.
What caused the trade-in problems to occur
Google later explained that there was a system error that prevented its third-party partners from verifying the receipt of Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro XL models. As a result, it appeared that those trade-ins were incorrectly reported as not being shipped. As a result, consumers had their credit cards charged incorrectly, or didn't receive a credit when they were supposed to receive one..
Those impacted by the system error will receive a full refund
The company did say recently that anyone impacted by this issue will receive a refund for the full quoted value of their trade-in. Google said that it will email a notification to those affected by this issue.
