The leap from the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was astronomical. | Image by PhoneArena
With the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year, Samsung showed everyone that it was most certainly capable of making a foldable flagship that didn’t feel outdated at launch. To further showcase its prowess, the company then went on to launch the Galaxy Z TriFold, a marvel of engineering rivaled only by the Huawei Mate XT.
Samsung took what it had learned from its region-exclusive and very limited run of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE and gave us a foldable phone that made other manufacturers sweat. And, as far as I can see from emerging reports, it appears that the company is not done showing off just yet.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 will, mercifully, continue the tradition of true innovation that Samsung kicked off for its foldable segment with the Fold 7.
First, the maybes and the maybe nots
Samsung improved the display crease on the Fold 7 by a large margin. | Image by PhoneArena
Earlier this year, Samsung showed off something that the smartphone industry has been working towards for many years. A crease-free foldable display by Samsung, a very promising piece of tech that can withstand continuous folds and unfolds without developing a crease down the middle. At least, according to Samsung.
As someone who steered clear of foldables for many years purely because of the crease, this is hands down the most important innovation for folding phones that a manufacturer has shown off in ages. More important than battery capacity, chassis thickness, or display size.
There is a chance that the Galaxy Z Fold 8, as well as the new Galaxy Z Wide Fold, will feature this display. Unfortunately, this has not been confirmed yet. It might take the company a couple more years to adopt this display across its foldables.
However, if the Fold 8 features a crease-free screen, then I’m sold. I’d wager that people who have been holding out for Apple’s foldable iPhone will also be swayed.
Galaxy Z Fold 8, what we know

Now, on to more informed pastures.
According to reports, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will look very similar to the Fold 7 before it. It will feature a newer processor, of course, but Samsung is heavily focused on the Galaxy Z Wide Fold for the time being.
It would have been so easy for the company to ignore the Fold 8 entirely. Just slap in a new chip, fiddle with the price tag a bit, tweak the camera software, and then be done with it.
That’s not what Samsung is doing, however. According to a new report, the front camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is based on new technology that has helped the company to drastically reduce the size of the punch hole.
Even if it’s a minor upgrade over the Fold 7, the sleeker camera design signifies something very important to my mind.
Samsung isn’t done yet

As I mentioned above, Samsung could have very easily knocked off the ‘7’, replaced it with an ‘8’, and called it a day. It didn’t, and that means something.
Samsung realized recently that people will always buy Galaxy phones no matter the price, as long as they’re either capable, impressive design-wise, or interesting in some way. The company’s name means a lot in the smartphone world, enough to give it plenty of leeway when it gets things wrong.
What is the worst thing that Samsung has done to date?
I’m glad to see that Samsung has decided to keep innovating even more aggressively now. Look at the Galaxy S26 Ultra and its privacy display. Or the aforementioned Galaxy Z TriFold.
A smaller front camera on the Fold 8 might not seem like much, but it’s only possible because of true change at the hardware level.
And if Samsung is willing to put in the resources to do that for a phone that won’t even be the most exciting brand-new thing to be shown off this year, then I’m optimistic that the company has finally gotten its priorities straight.
I hope this means that future Galaxy foldables will blow us away even more and that Samsung will not fall back into a comfortable cycle of mediocre annual releases.
