No, Apple hasn't given up on its proprietary AI toolset, and yes, Siri is stepping its convenience up in a big way this fall (in beta), becoming "profoundly more personal, capable, and conversational." Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri AI is advertised as an "entirely new version" of Cupertino's trusty old virtual assistant, expanding... basically everywhere you might ever need help with anything on your handset.

The camera hardware is the clear star of the show
For the first time ever, an iPhone comes with a variable aperture lens. This is a big step forward for Apple, but contrary to what you might think if you don’t follow the Android landscape very closely, you’re not looking at actual mobile industry pioneers or trendsetters here.

Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are merely following the examples of devices as old as the 2023-released Huawei Mate 60 or 2024’s Xiaomi 14 Ultra while technically beating Samsung’s flagships to the variable aperture punch… if you don’t count the dual aperture-equipped Galaxy S9 and S10 series.

In a nutshell, the new technology on the iPhone 18 Pro duo will allow you to control the size of the primary 48MP lens opening, which in turn will determine how much light hits the imaging sensor. When and why is this useful? For instance, a low-light photography scenario will require a larger aperture (which confusingly means you’ll need to use a lower F-number), while taking pics in direct sunlight will greatly benefit from a smaller aperture (or a higher F-digit) to reduce overexposure.
The Apple A20 Pro chipset is an absolute beast
In related news, water is wet and grass is green. All jokes aside, I realize that Apple tends to hype up every new A-series processor as the industry’s biggest ever raw power breakthrough (which is obviously not always the case), but the A20 Pro… truly sounds special.

This is an incredibly energy-efficient 2nm-based affair, mind you, that promises to improve the speed of the already impressive A19 Pro by around 20 percent while taking battery endurance to previously unimaginable heights. Yes, the iPhone 18 Pro is purportedly capable of delivering up to 36 hours of uninterrupted video playback, while its big brother promises to bump that number up to as much as 45 hours. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max were unveiled last year with 33-hour and 39-hour battery life claims, respectively.
On top of everything else, the A20 Pro SoC is also backed by an upgraded vapor chamber that guarantees overheating will never become a concern and your gaming sessions can be longer and smoother than ever before.

The same is unsurprisingly true for the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max’s upgraded camera, which is getting aperture-based image correction to make sure your photos are processed and adjusted correctly at all levels whatever f-stop you choose to go for in any environment.
That’s obviously not the only software-specific camera improvement headed for the iPhone 18 Pro duo, as professional photographers will get new manual control options allowing them significantly more creative freedom across everything from shutter speed to white balance, focus, and exposure levels.
The design changes are subtle but noticeable
Will next year’s iPhone 20 Pro adopt a radical new all-glass, quad-curved look with no screen bezels and an under-display front-facing camera and Face ID system? No one can know for sure just yet, but what’s obviously certain (and what was always fairly easy to predict) is that the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max don’t look radically different from their forerunners in any big way.

That being said, given that last year’s iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max changed quite a few things about their own predecessors on the cosmetic front, it’s definitely nice to see the Dynamic Island reduced in size this time around in addition to being upgraded in functionality.
Yes, you can now toggle between three live activities (up from two) on the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max’s screen cutout, and yes, that means the two new devices should be slightly smaller than the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max overall despite keeping the 6.3 and 6.9-inch display diagonals unchanged. Weirdly enough, the overall product dimensions and screen sizes are not confirmed yet.
Price and availability
Look, I’m not going to beat it around the bush. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are costlier than all their forerunners, and I don’t like that one bit. But remember when everyone was convinced a $300 price hike over the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max was unavoidable?

Thankfully, that’s proven… inaccurate (to be kind), as Apple’s newest iPhones start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. That would have been unacceptable just a few years ago, but after everything that’s happened in the mobile industry of late, the new tags are almost miraculously low, only adding $100 to the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max’s original base prices.
At $1,299, the iPhone 18 Pro Max matches Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, while the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro is $100 more expensive than a Galaxy S26 Plus in an entry-level 256GB storage configuration.
Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 12 (which would be unusual if Friday wasn't September 11), and the actual release is predictably set for next Friday, September 18.
