Meta flips the switch on Threads monetization globally

Threads on mobile
Meta has officially announced that ads are coming to Threads for all users globally starting next week. After a year of testing, the platform is opening up its feed to sponsored content as it crosses the 400 million user mark.

The "clean" feed is officially over

In a new update from Meta today, the company confirmed that it is flipping the switch on monetization for its text-based app, Threads. Starting next week, you will begin seeing sponsored posts in your feed, regardless of where you live. This comes roughly one year after the company began testing advertisements with a small group of partners to see how they fit into the app’s flow.

According to the announcement, the rollout will be gradual. You likely won’t be bombarded with commercials immediately. Instead, the frequency of ads will start low and increase over time as the system learns what is relevant to you. Advertisers will be able to use the same tools they use for Instagram and Facebook to place promotions on Threads, meaning the ads you see will likely be targeted based on your activity across Meta’s other apps.

Why this changes the game

This move is significant because Threads has largely been celebrated for its clutter-free interface since it launched. For a long time, it was the "quiet" alternative to X (formerly Twitter), which is often criticized for its heavy ad load and chaotic algorithm. Now that Threads has grown to over 400 million monthly active users and recently surpassed X in daily mobile usage, Meta is ready to start making money from it.

For the average user, this means the experience is about to feel a lot more like Instagram. While this might be annoying for those who loved the ad-free environment, it is a standard step for free social platforms.

How do you feel about seeing ads on Threads?

The price of free apps

I have to admit, I enjoyed the ad-free honeymoon phase of Threads while it lasted. It felt rare to scroll through a social feed in 2026 without being sold something every few seconds. However, we all knew this day was coming. Meta is a business, and maintaining a platform with hundreds of millions of users isn't cheap.

Ideally, the ads will be as unobtrusive as possible. Since Meta’s ad targeting is usually pretty sharp, I am hopeful that the sponsored posts will at least be relevant to things I actually care about, rather than random junk.
