Yellow hue on your Nexus 5X screen? No worries, Google will replace your phone
Issues with a new smartphone arriving with a yellow tint to the screen, date all the way back to the Apple iPhone 4. At the time, it was thought that some adhesive hadn't had time to dry, and for most, the yellow tint or dots slowly disappeared. Last year, the OnePlus One also ran into a similar problem. Yellow tinted displays were also an issue with the LG manufactured Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. Now, some Nexus 5X users are having a problem with a yellow hue on their screens, providing LG with a deja vu moment.

If you are one of the Nexus 5X owners that has a yellow hued screen, you should contact Google customer service immediately. Some of those affected by this problem have been sent a replacement handset. On the other hand, you might want to wait to see if the yellow goes away as it has in other situations. In those cases, it took about a week for the yellow to disappear.

You can check out some photos comparing  affected Nexus 5X units with other unaffected handsets, by clicking on the slideshow below.

Wow, now I thought this was a problem exclusive to the OnePlus team. At least they're offering replacements quickly, unlike OP

Ah. Not good. An age old problem that happened to older nexus devices too, like the Nexus 4.

They're actually not offering replacements quickly. I was one of the original posters on Reddit and they used my photo above, but the guy at Google said they've had ZERO complaints about screen color. Despite other posters having called before me. Then told me maybe the color was different because the screen is 5.2", and asked me what troubleshooting I've done. So obviously he was clueless. I'm like, "That makes no sense." And his only solution was "escalate" the case to the engineers at LG.

So I demanded they swap it out, and after checking with his supervisor 3 times, they did a "damaged on arrival" and sent another unit... which was WAY more yellow than the original unit. So I bought another unit, and will keep doing it till I get one I'm happy with.

Well damn. And it isn't a color calibration problem too is it? (Never had the problem)

It's kind of a common problem, the Nexus 5's had the same problem. Luckily I got an amazingly white/cool screened one the first time. I tried 3 Nexus 5's, and every one they sent me after the original had yellow screens, so I kept the original.

I don't know how they mess up entire batches. But one thing that seems to be consistent is the manufactured date. People who got ones manu'd 10/2015 have a decent color (compared to my cool Nexus 5 screen it still looks warm), but the ones manu'd 9/2015 are very yellow. That's the only common thread I can guess so far. I'll find out tomorrow when my 3rd unit comes. I'd post a link to the coolest 5x I've gotten vs. my Nexus 5, but I can't post links til I have 30 posts here. You can see it on reddit (in the source) though. My name is jeff71a over there.

And I probably would have NEVER noticed that the color was warm, but I was literally holding my Nexus 5 when I got my Nexus 5x, so immediately I noticed a difference. Yeah, I could live with a warmer screen, and might, but... I like cool white screens typically.

If you go to Ars and other places that reviewed the Nexus 5x, they take photos of the unit and EVERY one of theirs is the very yellow tinted one. I have no clue why they didn't point it out, they even took a photo of it NEXT to a cool-white Nexus 5.

What country is this happening? In the UK, I got my replacements for previous nexii before even sending in the faulty model back! Google barely even asked why it needed replacing and happily replaced multiple times.

US. It depends on whom you get on the phone. I got "Allen." I have no idea what his accent was or what was wrong with him, but he was hard to understand, clearly new and had no idea what to do. I called back 10 minutes later, but they have it so, if possible, you get the SAME rep. I was like, "Oh no," when he picked up. I told him to just replace the unit, I was ready to buy another one, but he asked his manager and they did it as a damaged on delivery instead so my credit card doesn't get double charged (I don't care if it does or not, but whatever).

Technically their policy is 15 days, no questions asked, Allen didn't know that though. He didn't even know the screen resolution of the 5x. I'm just wondering if I'll ever get a cool white screen and if I should give up.

I would never ever go from an LG Nexus to any Alcatel. At least not anytime soon. Alcatel is low low low on the totem poll.

yeah... the main advantage the alcatel has is the price.

Seriously. Most phones are $100-300 over priced.

I mean way above what would give them a 20% profit per unit.

The main disadvantage, at least in the US is that it only works on half the carriers, where the Nexus works on all US carriers.

Alcatel has the price and audio. But nothing can really beat a Nexus experience, can it?

Had this issue with my Nexus 5 2014. One reason why I didn't try my luck with this year model.

Learn from your mistakes Google. Don't repeat them. Set higher standards for your manufacturers.

I was wondering about that. Colors on mine only look good from exactly straight on. Any other angle yellows it up quite nicely...

I get that this is bad, and Google hopefully will sort this out in due time. But, well,... Think of this as a factory-built Bluelight Filter. LOL

This happens to every lcd. The iPhone 6 and 6s have piss yellow whites too that they blame on glue.

I am hoping I get the cooler display on my nexus 5x though. Should be coming today

Sony jacks up the blue though to hide this and the Z3 got blasted for it. Lol cold screens look fantastic though.

Not a good start for the Nexus 5X. I think they should take $300aud off the price :D

In photo #3, the "replacement" unit on the left is actually the MORE yellow one. The one on the right is the original unit that is LESS yellow, but still has a slight yellowish tint to it compared to my Nexus 5. I know, because obviously I took that picture and posted it on Reddit. I have third 5x coming to compare because even the "unaffected" ones have a yellowish color.

Googling my way here just to see if others have same issue. It's my second defective 5X! First one had defective camera (dark spot in the middle of the viewport). So crappy quality for such a high price device (450€ 16Gb model)!
