T-Mobile cans the Sony Xperia Z3
It looks like Sony keeps having trouble selling its high-end Xperia Z smartphone series in the US. The Sony Xperia Z2 reached the United States a few good months after the smartphone's international release date, and now T-Mobile announced on Twitter that it has discontinued the Xperia Z3, the smartphone that Sony announced back in September 2014 at IFA Berlin.

The news comes as a T-Mobile rep recently responded to an inquiry on Twitter regarding the disappearance of the Sony Xperia Z3 from the carrier's website. The link posted by T-Mobile as a reply directs potential customers to a page where the only Sony smartphones available for purchase are refurbished Xperia Z and Z1S handsets. This latest development is an unfortunate for Sony's push in the US, as the only carrier offering a Sony flagship in the country is Verizon, with its customized Xperia Z3v version.

Last week, Sony announced a new and bold marketing campaign for the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact. Now that T-Mobile has discontinued the Xperia Z3, the only way to purchase the smartphone in the United States is to order an unlocked handset from retailers such as Amazon, where the Xperia Z3 is available at about $500.

The Xperia Z4, recently leaked online carrying a 5.1-inch display with a resolution of 1440 by 2560 pixels (QHD) and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, seems to be an incremental update to the Xperia Z3. It remains to be seen if the Xperia Z4 can penetrate the US market, unlike Sony's previous two flagship smartphones.
