Android 17 is at the door and so is Samsung's take on it, called One UI 9. But not all Galaxy phones and tablets will get One UI 9 – there are hardware limitations to what a phone can support in terms of software.
It's not just ancient Samsung devices that are excluded from joining the One UI 9 club. Even some super popular and beloved flagships and midrangers like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S21 FE or the Galaxy A53 5G won't be getting One UI 9.
Samsung's seven-year support promise
Older Galaxy flagships are stuck with four years of support – and time does fly! | Image by PhoneArena
If you recall something about Samsung providing seven years of software support for their flagships, you should know that this doesn't apply to flagships like the Galaxy S22 Ultra (it arrived with four years of major OS updates and five years of security patches). It's the Galaxy S24 series that premiered with the extended uphold.
Back in 2024, Samsung made a big leap and announced a seven-year support period for the Galaxy S24 lineup, including the Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24 Plus and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Some months later, even the more affordable Galaxy S24 FE joined their company with the seven-year support promise.
This is great news for Galaxy S24 (and newer series) owners, but Galaxy S22 Ultra owners will surely feel left behind, even if their device still hasn't deteriorated in terms of hardware.

Galaxy S22 Plus
Galaxy S22 Ultra
Galaxy S21 FE
Galaxy Z Fold 4
Galaxy Z Flip 4
Galaxy Tab S8
Galaxy Tab S8+
Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
Many mid-rangers are also excluded from One UI 9; just to name a few:

What is One UI 9 all about?
One UI 9 will build on One UI 8 with more AI features, a refreshed design and new productivity tools. Samsung is reportedly working on a redesigned Internet Browser with a new Ask AI feature powered by Perplexity AI. The update is also expected to bring a new way to activate Bixby and expand Gemini Intelligence on supported premium Galaxy phones.
Users may also get a new selection box in the Gallery app for choosing multiple images more easily. Samsung Notes is expected to receive new creative tools for writing and drawing. Overall, One UI 9 aims to make Galaxy devices smarter, faster and easier to use.
When to expect One UI 9?
Samsung is expected to debut (the stable version of) One UI 9 first on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. These are due in July, which is just around the corner.
Before that, Samsung has already opened the first beta program for the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus and Galaxy S26 Ultra in select markets.
The final update will likely roll out to additional flagship and mid-range Galaxy phones after the foldable launch. As with previous One UI releases, availability will vary by device and region.
