Google's warehouse must have a limited supply of some Pixel Pro Fold models.

A Pixel 9 Pro Fold owner must have been thrilled when he discovered that Google had shipped him its latest foldable Pixel to replace the defective Pixel 9 Pro Fold he was using. Problems with the front-facing camera led Reddit subscriber u/hiluckycool to get in touch with Google Support and he was stunned to discover that the Alphabet subsidiary was replacing his Pixel 9 Pro Fold with a Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Google replaces a defective 2024 Pixel foldable with the latest and greatest 2026 model

It isn't often that a company like Google will replace a two-year-old device with the latest version of the same model hot off the assembly line. After all, the Pixel Pro Fold is updated every year and if you want the latest and greatest version, you are expected to pay for it. The 256GB version of the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is priced at $1,899. The version sporting 512GB of storage will run you $2,019 and the top-of-the-line 1TB variant carries a $2,249 price tag.

Amazingly, Google made this exchange even though the warranty on the defective Pixel 9 Pro Fold had expired and the owner did not have insurance. Apparently, Google gave the foldable three years of extended warranty coverage in order to make the swap possible.

Comparing the Pixel 11 Pro Fold with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold

As for direct comparisons between the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, the most important change is under the hood. The former is equipped with the Tensor G4 application processor (AP), which was built by Samsung Foundry using its 4nm process node. The Tensor G6 AP, which drives the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, was manufactured by TSMC using its 3nm process.

Other changes include a slightly larger 6.5-inch cover screen on the newest foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold vs. the 6.3-inch external display on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While the latter has a 60-120Hz refresh rate, the newer 2026 foldable offers a 0-120Hz Variable Refresh Rate. Turning to the internal foldable screen, peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is improved on the new model, which has peak brightness of up to 3,600 nits.

The newer foldable did have some improved battery specs

The Redditor who is receiving the Pixel 11 Pro Fold as a replacement from Google for his Pixel 9 Pro Fold might notice some of the improvements in battery specs although at 4,700 mAh, the capacity of the newest model is only 100 mAh larger when compared to the earlier Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Where there is a larger change is when the two devices are charged wirelessly. The 2024 foldable will charge as fast as 7.5W sans wires. The 2026 variant uses magnets for more precise placement of the charger, and also charges wirelessly at a speed as fast as 25W.

Why did Google ship a brand-new Pixel 11 Pro Fold to this customer?

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a Pixel 11 Pro Fold replacing my Pixel 9 Pro Fold and I think most of you out there would agree. However, situations like this-when you are given the opportunity to replace your phone with a model that is two years newer-don't fall into your lap every day. This opportunity happened because Google had run out of Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold inventory to send as replacement units.
