Back in 2024, Pixel 9 owners were among the first Android users in the US to have access to Satellite SOS—and the two-year free period was supposed to end in 2026. But Google has quietly blessed Pixel 9 owners with another whole year of free satellite service.
Bonus!

Per the latest reports, a Google spokesperson has confirmed officially that the company will extend the Satellite SOS feature for another 365 days for Pixel 9 owners.
Google's spokesperson highlighted that the extra year of free satellite service will come at no additional cost but didn't share anything.

Apple is also in the bonus business
Those among us who own the iPhone 14 series won't be surprised by Google's latest actions, since Apple itself has extended the Emergency SOS feature deadline after the initial two years.
Such satellite-based SOS features, regardless of whether you're on iOS or Android, are not created for fun. These can be a lifesaver when you're in a remote area with no cellular coverage… or when a natural disaster hits and cuts off the terrestrial-based cellular network.
The idea is that if you get injured, lost or stranded, the feature lets you contact emergency services even when conventional calls and messages aren't an option.

How is it possible?
Google's Satellite SOS feature debuted in 2024 with partnerships with Garmin Response and Skylo, bringing together emergency response coordination and satellite connectivity.
Garmin Response, which specializes in handling SOS incidents around the world, became a key part of the service in the US. Skylo supplied the connectivity infrastructure that enabled Pixel 9 phones to communicate with satellites.
What about beyond 2027?
Currently, there's nothing official. Whether Google will announce subscription pricing or something else, it remains a mystery right now. But an extra year is still a nice surprise, especially in 2026, when everything got so much more expensive.
