As I suspected and suggested while reporting on the original story—the one about a user who documented how their Galaxy Z Fold 8's screen corners sink inwards push pressed with a finger—this phenomenon was a premeditated act by Samsung.
The mini gap that opens up between the display and the bezel when you press hard enough is present so that your phone doesn't get damaged.
Samsung is basically saying that the inner display is designed to slightly give way when the phone is folded, rather than remaining completely rigid. If something like a grain of sand gets trapped between the two halves, that small amount of movement creates a cushioning effect and helps prevent the particle from scratching or damaging the screen.
Samsung says this was built into the design specifically to protect users from this kind of problem, which is why it didn't previously feel the need to explain the feature publicly.
It's logical, but still
Sammy's explanation is a logical one, yet… hear me out: don't play with your phone's edges for no reason. There's dust and miniature garbage particles floating around in your house, even if you keep it really clean.

None of the above matters about the Galaxy Z Fold 8's overall popularity. In fact, as we told you, Samsung's latest book-style foldables are selling absurdly well.
Samsung says combined sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra in the US are 30% higher than the Z Fold 7, with the two models now making up around 80% of Galaxy Z purchases. Meanwhile, 30% of Z Flip 8 buyers switched from another brand, and most of them were first-time foldable buyers.
