Verizon users complain reps won't let them buy the iPhone Duo and hint it's only for those who'll switch

Is that normal practice?

Getting the iPhone Duo isn't an easy task, but for some Verizon subscribers, it's straightforwardly impossible. When walking into a Verizon store, they're told that the telco will get them the iPhone Duo, but not now. Maybe days or weeks later, since the current availability is zero, zilch, nada.

Imagine their mild shock moments later when a T-Mobile customer walked in at the same Verizon store and the representatives brought out an iPhone Duo unit in the flesh, waiting for them if they switched carriers.

Not very amusing

The iPhone Duo is all the rage these days—it's Apple's first-ever foldable and it's about to cause another "-gate" scandal, similar to Batterygate. This time, it's "crackgate", the way its display and hinge have been acting up and breaking down since it got launched last Friday.

But even if one wanted to get the iPhone Duo regardless of the looming issues, it's not an easy task. Scalpers pre-ordered a ton of Duo units and everybody wants to give it a try, as it seems.

Another way to get the iPhone Duo is through your carrier—AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. All big three telcos have announced their Duo offers.

What will be the fate of the iPhone Duo?

How it went

So a Verizon subscriber tried to do that (they went to their local Verizon store in New York) and got told there weren't any units available right now. The whole story is available at Reddit and it's titled "Verizon Stores Lying about iPhone Duo supply".

Then, the OP (original poster) had their friend, a T-Mobile subscriber, to go in the same store later in the day and ask for the iPhone Duo if they switched to Verizon. Lo and behold, the iPhone Duo was brought out in the flesh.

OP suspects this is being deliberately done in order for reps to get "new customer commissions" and it sounds logical. That doesn't make it any better, does it now?

Fellow Redditor commented that with AT&T, it's the same story. "They're very unlikely to sell you limited stock for an upgrade off the street, they reserve it for new lines because money", a user by the nickname of "Dragon_Slayer_Hunter" says.

We've contacted Verizon for a comment and we'll update this article once the company shares some information on the matter.
