Samsung just launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Apple is expected to join the party with the foldable iPhone Ultra, but Huawei was the first to launch a wide phone with the Pura X. This was followed by the larger Pura X Max, both of which were foldables, but the company is now expanding on the wide idea with a regular slab device.
Huawei Pura X View is a wide non-foldable smartphone
The rumors turned out true, and Huawei just announced a non-folding smartphone with a relatively wide aspect ratio. The Chinese company unveiled (source in Chinese) the Pura X View, which comes with an aspect ratio that’s about 16:9.5, instead of the taller 21:9, which has been the norm for years.
While this has been dubbed the first non-folding smartphone with a wide display by some, the device could be taken as a throwback to about a decade ago. Devices like the Galaxy S7 Edge, Huawei’s own Nexus 6P, and even the original Google Pixel came with 16:9 displays, but they also had wide borders on the top and the bottom.
Unlike them, the Pura X View’s front is almost completely covered by the display, with its screen-to-body ratio reaching 96.1%. Huawei says the bezel of the device is only 1.05 mm thick. The display itself has a 2,232 x 1,320 resolution and up to 6,500 nits of brightness, but the company hasn’t revealed how big it is.

As it's becoming common already, the Pura X View is a slim phone with a large battery. The device is just 6.68 mm thick and weighs 201 grams, but packs a 7,000 mAh battery that puts to shame the much heftier Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which are stuck at around 5,000 mAh.
Huawei hasn’t revealed the camera specs, but the photos show a triple shooter on the back, which sits in a horizontal module, reminiscent of the Pixel 11 series. We don’t know what the chipset will be either, but it’ll be paired with 12GB of RAM and between 256GB and 1TB storage.
Earlier this week, a Weibo leaker claimed (source in Chinese) the phone will sport a Kirin 9030S chipset, a 6.39-inch display, and a triple 50MP camera. This should be taken with a grain of salt, as they got the battery capacity wrong, so other details may be off as well.
What type of phone would you prefer to use?
If Samsung’s latest foldable is anything to judge the Pura X View by, this could be a refreshing change to what we’re used to. In his in-depth review of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, my colleague Victor found the wider form factor was great for real use.
Is this a new trend coming?

Huawei may be the first, but rumor has it is not the only company with such a device. Oppo is reportedly already developing a wide non-foldable, which could come sometime in the first half of 2027 with an around 6.3-inch display and ultra-thin bezels. Sounds familiar, right?
What’s still unknown is the potential price of these phones. Huawei hasn’t announced the price of the Pura X View yet, as it’s only allowing buyers to pre-reserve it through its official store in China. Full details about it, including the price and availability, will be revealed on August 28, but the chances for a global release are practically zero.
I’d certainly try this one
I wouldn’t say I need something very different from current phones, but after a decade of enjoying practically the same shape of smartphones, I wouldn’t mind trying a fresh idea. Unfortunately, chances are that Apple, Google, and Samsung are going to wait a few years before even considering such an experiment, so we’ll just have another nice trend to watch from the sidelines.
