Survey indicates that 1.5 trillion text messages were sent in 2009
There was little doubt that we were going to beat out last year's number of sending out over 1 trillion text messages as more and more people are relying on this method of communication. Voice usage is seemingly looking to trend downwards while text message usage is exploding at a decent rate which can be attributed to lower cost and requirement of the feature on contracts. According to the CTIA's semi-annual Wireless Industry Survey, we've managed to easily top the numbers this time around as approximately over 1.5 trillion text messages were sent in 2009 – that equates to roughly 5 billion messages per day. The big influx of text messaging use can be found towards the last half of the year – which makes some sense as the busy holiday season generally garners a lot of people to contact loved ones through SMS. With that in mind, there is no end in sight in the growing usage among people around the world utilizing text messaging as the premier choice of communication.
